Oscar-winning director James Cameron, who launched the Terminator franchise more than forty years ago,has once again stirred excitement among fans as he talked about the future of the series. During a recent interview with CNN, Cameron confirmed that while he is working on a new Terminator story, it's been proving to be rather difficult with the digital advancements we are facing as of now.
“We are living in a science fiction age right now,” Cameron explained, as he talked about how developments in AI and technology are moving so quickly that it's rather difficult to imagine a fictional future that isn't instantly outpaced by real world events. The irony is, of course, the fact that the original film served as a cautionary tale about how humanity's reliance on machines could bring about doom in society. Now seeing as we are actually living in that age, it's not too hard to understand why Cameron is facing setbacks.
During the interview, the director said,
“I’m tasked with writing a new Terminator story. I’ve been unable to get started on that very far because I don’t know what to say that won’t be overtaken by real events. We are living in a science fiction age right now.”
Still, the confirmation that he's working on the project is just the update we needed regarding the future of Terminator. Still, if anyone can come up with another incredible story about the chemistry of machinery and humanity, it's probably James Cameron.
More details about the Terminator franchise
As one of the most iconic science fiction sagas in Hollywood, the Terminator franchise was born from the masterminds of James Cameron and Gale Ann Hurd. Blending cyberpunk grit with apocalyptic dread, the films tell stories about humanity's desperate fight against Skynet, a rogue artificial intelligence that is bent on wiping out mankind. Skynet's choice of weapons are the Terminators, terrifying cyborg assassins that are designed to look human. The T-800 model is played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who became the face of the series. Time travel is one of the most important aspects in the films as both the humans and the machines race against time to alter the past and control the future.
The franchise started with 1984's The Terminator which was a low budget thriller that became a box office smash. It was then succeeded by Terminator 2: Judgement Day in 1991, which raised the bar with their groundbreaking effects and became a pop culture icon. Later films followed, even though some opened to mixed reviews. But with hopes of Cameron working on a new film in the franchise, the series could just get the resurrection it needed.
Beyond the films, the franchise expanded into Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, comics, games, and even the recent anime Terminator Zero, proving Skynet’s shadow is far from gone.
As of now, the series is available to stream on Prime Video.
