Is Nelly Furtado currently dating? Relationship history explored

Nelly Furtado, who is currently single, recently appeared on stage to perform at the Broadmasters Festival on Saturday, August 9, at Watergate Bay, in the UK. The Maneater singer, who is set to go on her Better Than Ever Summer Festival tour later this month, had earlier this year, uploaded a picture of herself embracing body positivity, stating that 2025 would be her year of loving every inch of herself.

Nelly Furtado was previously married to Demacio Castellon, whom she married in 2008 and divorced in 2016, according to a Billboard report from April 2017. Furtado has in the past opened up about one of her past relationships being abusive during her appearance on the Call Me Daddy podcast.

Per Us Weekly, during her appearance on the Call Me Daddy podcast hosted by Alex Cooper in November last year, Nelly Furtado spoke about a particular abusive relationship she was in, although she did not specify who she was reffering to. She said:

"I went through a very difficult time where I think I accepted some things that I would never accept now in terms of the way you’re treated."

She added:

"I think that it’s honest to say that it is hard when you’re in a relationship that has that imbalance… and abusive qualities. It is hard to see outside of it because you isolate yourself, you stop talking to your friends, you don’t tell your friends the truth about what’s going on in your life, you live in a bubble, and it’s hard to admit that you have chosen to not say anything. It’s hard to admit to yourself.

According to People magazine, Nelly Furtado has been in three highly publicized relationship in recent times. She was in a relationship with Jasper Gahunia from 2001 until their breakup in 2005. The former couple welcomed their only daughter, Nevis, in 2003, and both of them have continued to co-parent her over the years. Speaking about why she never married Gahunia, Nelly said:

"I’m kind of modern. I don’t really live by society’s standards. Maybe in the next five years I’ll get married, have more kids. One grandmother had eight kids, the other had 10. If I have that many kids, then I would need a hubby."

Soon after her breakup from Gahunia, Nelly Furtado began dating sound engineer Demacio Castellon sometime in 2006. The former couple met while working together on her 2006 album. According to People, they got engaged in 2007 after just a few months of dating. The news of Nelly Furtado's marriage was revealed in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, when she spoke about looking forward to the next step in their relationship. She said:

"We got married July 19th. I love it. It’s a nice phase of my life. I just feel kind of free and relaxed and more in tune with trying not to be so stressed out. [I’m] trying to enjoy things a little more. I’m happy … I’m excited about the future."

In an interview with People, Nelly Furtado spoke about what it was like working with her then husband. She said:

“It’s a healthy tension working together. It doesn’t always go smoothly, of course, and it can be really challenging when there are differences of opinion, which of course happens. But good things always tend to come out of it, and that’s the whole point."

According to Huffington Post, in 2017, Nelly Furtado announced that she was divorced from Demacio Castellon after eight years of marriage. In an interview with Just Jared, the Grammy winner discussed her split and said:

"I went through an emotionally difficult time last summer and I actually wrote and sung myself songs to get through it. I would sing to myself while I drove on these long drives and I thought to myself, 'I'm so lucky that I can write songs because I can soothe myself with them."

Nelly Furtado later dated rapper Jerry, whose real name is Gerard Damien Long, with whom she welcomed two children. Not much is known about the relationship, except that the couple was together for a few years before their breakup prior to 2023.

During her appearance on the Call Me Daddy podcast, Furtado talked about enjoying her current single life and said:

"It’s a very fun time in my life because I didn’t really get to be single in my 20s, right? I was pretty locked down in relationships. I was in long-term relationships for much of my 20s and 30s. So only recently, I think in the last few years, I’ve become single again.”

In her conversation with Alex Cooper, Nelly Furtado also added that she has now learned the importance of finding the right balance in her dating life.
