Pineapple Express 2 is a sequel that fans of the first film have reportedly been waiting for years. The first film was directed by David Gordon Green and was released theatrically on August 8, 2008, by Sony Pictures Releasing. It was produced by Judd Apatow and Shauna Robertson. Here's the official synopsis as per Letterboxd,

A stoner and his dealer are forced to go on the run from the police after the pothead witnesses a cop commit a murder.

Seth Rogen, who co-wrote and starred in the film, recently discussed the possibility of a sequel. Let's see what he said.

Seth Rogen talks about Pineapple Express 2

Seth Rogen recently appeared on Watch What Happens Live, where he was asked an audience question about Pineapple Express 2. In response, he said:

“Maybe. We can probably sell it to streaming or something.”

The show's host, Andy Cohen, then said that there is demand for the sequel, to which Rogen responded:

“There could be. You never know. I don’t know. I’m not great with sequels. It’s not where my mind goes, but maybe one day.”

Back in 2020, Rogen appeared on Howard Stern's show where he revealed they had planned a sequel, but it was scrapped due to an undisclosed issue. He said,

“We tried to make one. Thanks to the Sony hack, you can actually find the email when Sony decided to kill the movie and not make it. It was something we were very open to several years ago, but Sony was not that interested in it.”

Even if Pineapple Express 2 happens, it's unlikely Rogen would work with James Franco again. The two were friends for several years. However, after multiple women accused Franco of inappropriate behavior, their friendship was impacted.

Rogen co-wrote the screenplay for the first film with Evan Goldberg, while the story was by Rogen, Goldberg, and Judd Apatow. The trio also worked on titles like Superbad and Knocked Up. Pineapple Express grossed $102.4 million at the box office against a $26 million budget, making it a profitable venture. Over the years, it has gained a cult following among fans. For his role, Franco received a Golden Globe Award nomination that year.
