Robert Plant recently appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where he opened up about his love for Tolkien. According to Parade, Plant, who is not currently married but was previously married to Maureen Wilson, appeared to geek out and speak at length about how much the beloved author has influenced his songwriting process. He said:
"Tolkien really opened the door to all that dark age, meander of history. It spoke to me because he lived and his points of reference were very close to where I lived, and very close to where my parents unwittingly used to take me through this landscape."
In his conversation with Stephen Colbert, Robert Plant went on to explain how most people, including other members of Led Zeppelin, did not know initially that he had been inspired by Tolkien to write his songs. He said:
"It didn’t exist at the time. Tolkien, he’d had his moment, I guess. I guess The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings had subsided.”

Robert Plant, whose full name is Robert Anthony Plant, was born in West Bromwich in Staffordshire, UK, on August 20, 1948, to parents Annie Celia Cain and Robert C. Plant. According to Far Out Magazine, he was musically inclined from a young age and grew up idolizing Elvis Presley.
Early in his career, a young Robert Plant played for various bands, including Band of Joy, during which he was introduced to John Bonham. Both of whom would later join Led Zeppelin alongside Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones. In his decades-long career, Plant has been nominated for multiple Grammy Awards as part of Led Zeppelin, and in 1995, he, along with other members of the band, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
According to People Magazine, Robert Plant was married to Maureen Wilson, who previously worked as a nurse. The couple were married for fifteen years, from 1968 until their divorce in 1983. The former couple shared three children. Their oldest son, Karac Pendragon, passed away in 1977 at a young age from a stomach illness, and Plant later dedicated All My Love from Led Zeppelin's eighth studio album, In Through The Out Door, to him.
Back in 1975, Robert Plant and his ex-wife, Maureen Wilson, were in a car accident while traveling in Greece. Following the seriousness of the accident, Led Zeppelin had to postpone their tour until Plant recovered. In his recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Plant, who is currently touring the country with his new band Saving Grace, further explained how he belived Tolkein to be a visionary writer. He said:
“I think Tolkien had it down and it’s so remarkable, this is the end of my career by the way, but it’s so remarkable you can have a culture that’s shunted into the west side of Britain that has nothing to do with English at all, the Welsh are British, and so, the mix of all the legend, space-shifting and all that stuff, it’s there. It’s 15 miles from where I live.”
The Please Read the Letter singer also had another child with Shirley Wilson, who happens to be the sister of his ex-wife. His fourth child, Jesse Lee Plant, was born in 1991 and has mostly led a life away from the spotlight.
