Sophie Cunningham has denied the affair allegations, linking her and Phoenix Mercury and Suns' CEO, Josh Bartelstein, a married man. She denied the allegations in a statement on X. According to the New York Post, the alleged affair was first mentioned in an unrelated lawsuit against the Suns.

Sophie Cunningham, a WNBA player for the Indiana Fever, used to play for the Phoenix Mercury from 2019 to 2024, a WNBA team whose CEO is Bartelstein. According to Athlon Sports, Cunningham, in recent times, has often joked about wanting a boyfriend, thus, it is assumed that she is currently single. Josh Bartelstein, a former college basketball player, is also the CEO of the Phoenix Suns (NBA).
Sophie Cunningham's statement against accusations of her alleged affair read as follows:
"I am deeply saddened by the recent false accusations made against me by Gene Traylor, someone I do not know and have never met. Let me be clear his statements are untrue and extremely hurtful."

In her statement, she expresses disappointment that the media did not ask for a comment from her before publishing "clickbait stories." She concluded her statement by adding that:
"I will not let untrue gossip take my focus away from what is most important to me which is basketball, my supportive team and my fans."
According to People Magazine, on May 20, the Phoenix Suns also denied the allegations that CEO Josh Bartelstein had an affair with Sophie Cunningham. According to the publication, Suns spokesperson, Stacey Mitch, told Front Office Sports that:
"The recent reports concerning Josh Bartelstein and Sophie Cunningham are entirely false and morally reprehensible."
According to multiple reports, the allegations originated from a lawsuit filed against the team by Gene Traylor, the Suns’ former director of security, alleging racial discrimination and harassment, retaliation, etc.
As per New York Post, in the lawsuit, Traylor claims that he informed Bartelstein that Cornelius Craig, the franchise’s vice president of security and risk management, was telling people that Bartelstein and Cunningham were allegedly having an affair.
