On June 9, 2025, the music world said goodbye to Sly Stone, not to be confused with the actor Sylvester Stallone. Stone was a funk music legend and the founding member of Sly and the Family Stone.
The singer, whose real name was Sylvester Stewart, died at the age of 82 from complications of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other long-standing health issues. But amidst his death, another confusion spread online regarding his passing.
Based on the shared nickname “Sly,” actor Sylvester Stallone, the 78-year-old Hollywood legend best known for engaging roles in Rocky and Rambo, was rumored to have passed away. Even though the information turned out to be false, social media was overwhelmed with countless tributes and “RIP Sylvester Stallone” posts, leading to toilet confusion.
According to the International Business Times, along with accomplished careers and fame, the two men share the same first name and nickname but come from completely different backgrounds. Sly Stone is mostly known for his groundbreaking amalgamation of funk, soul, rock, and pop in the late 1960s and the racially and sexually integrative band he spearheaded.
Stallone, on the other hand, has had a successful cinematic run with his several cult classic hits. While Stallone is yet to comment on the latest mix-up, this is not the first time that a rumor about his demise has spread.
More about previous death rumors involving Sylvester Stallone
In July 2024, a Facebook post with a fake BBC breaking news title was reported on Stallone’s death, along with an obituary caption with fake dates.
According to the Chicago Tribune, in 2018, a series of Photoshopped Images depicting Stallone as frail and terminally ill went viral on social media, prompting the actor to set things straight on Instagram.
"Please ignore this stupidity. Alive and well and happy and healthy. Still punching!" He wrote in the post.
Hoaxes like the alleged death of Sylvester Stallone are only a part of a larger pattern of celebrity misinformation on the internet. Practically every famous person, from Morgan Freeman to Jackie Chan, has been the victim of fake death allegations (Chicago Tribune).
Some come from small websites, scam web pages, or are created by prank Twitter accounts as clickbait or methods of generating cash through fake advertising.
As of June 2025, Stallone remains alive and active. He still stars in projects, including Tulsa King and his family reality series The Family Stallone, which airs on Paramount+. Recent posts on his official Instagram page depict the actor shooting, engaging with fans, and spending time with his family.
