Black Panther 2, officially called Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, was a sequel to 2018's Black Panther. The superhero film was directed by Ryan Coogler and was originally supposed to star Chadwick Boseman. However, Boseman passed away in 2020 due to cancer. This led Coogler to make several changes to the script. The film was eventually released in 2022 and became a critical and commercial success.

Recently, the director spoke about his original script, which Boseman never read. He said,

"It was insane, and Chadwick was going to kill it, but life goes as it goes.”

Let’s take a closer look at what the director had to say about the original screenplay for the sequel.

Ryan Coogler talks about his original plans for Black Panther 2 with Chadwick Boseman

Ryan Coogler recently appeared on Josh Horowitz's podcast, where he spoke about his original screenplay for Black Panther 2. He was planning to make it with Chadwick Boseman. However, the actor passed away due to colon cancer in August 2020 at the age of 43. He said that Boseman was too unwell to read the original script.

“I finished it, and I hit him up to read it, and he was too sick to read, bro. That was kind of how the timing was.”

He then explained the content of that script.

“The big thing about the script was a thing called the Ritual of 8 where, [when] a prince is 8 years old, he has to go spend 8 days in the bush with his father. The rule is for those 8 days the prince can ask the father any question and the father has to answer. During the course of those 8 days, Namor launches an attack … and it was a different version of Namor in that script, but he had to deal with someone who’s insanely dangerous, but because of this ritual, his son had to be joined at his hip the whole time … or else they’d have to violate this ritual that had never been broken. It was insane, and Chadwick was going to kill it, but life goes as it goes.”

Coogler changed the script after Boseman's passing and said that Black Panther 2 was "about women."

The director also recalled how he was anxious during the shooting of the first Black Panther film. He feared that the studio would fire him. Boseman would assure him that it won't happen.
