In an interview with Rolling Stone, Lady Gaga spoke about how she was going through a mental health struggle during the shoot of A Star Is Born. She admitted to doing the film on lithium, which is a drug used to treat mania.

“I did ‘A Star Is Born’ on lithium. There was one day that my sister said to me, ‘I don’t see my sister anymore’ and I canceled the tour. There was one day I went to the hospital for psychiatric care. I needed to take a break. I couldn’t do anything … I completely crashed. It was really scary. There was a time where I didn’t think I could get better.… I feel really lucky to be alive. I know that might sound dramatic, but we know how this can go.”

Gaga had cancelled ten shows of her tour, which she began right after the shooting was completed. The film premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival and was released theatrically on October 5, 2018. It received positive reviews and grossed approximately $436.3 million at the box office.
