"It’s a lot of female energy" - Top Chef alum Padma Lakshmi opens up about her relationship with her daughter Krishna

Top Chef alum, model, and culinary visionary Padma Lakshmi will grace the cover of Vogue India alongside her daughter, Krishna. In their interview for the cover story, Padma opened up about her relationship with her daughter.

“It’s just the two of us under one roof. While I’m going through perimenopause, she’s going through puberty. It’s a lot of female energy.”

Padma Lakshmi went on to say,

“It’s wonderful what Krishna said earlier, that we’re the most important thing in each other’s lives. Because five years from now, she will have her whole own life. So I just want to make sure she has a well-rounded understanding of what her craft is and what being an artist means.”

For her daughter, Krishna, the focus is on developing and growing into her own unique voice. She told the interviewer,

“I want to be taken seriously. I would like to do something that’s centred around who I am right now, not who I am as Littlehands. My hands—they aren’t so little anymore.”

Padma Lakshmi and daughter Krishna were open and transparent in their sit-down with Vogue India. As a companion piece to their interview, the pair participated in a game of “Tell the truth” for Vogue India’s YouTube channel, where the banter between the two was playful as ever.

Krishna revealed that they can both be overtly critical of each other’s wardrobe before leaving the house, admitting that the two can be critical when it comes to fashion. She said,

"We go by the five-second rule. If the other person can't change [their outfit] in five seconds and [the comment] is negative, don't say it. But before we leave the house, we're pretty brutal with each other, I will be like, 'You can't wear that in public with me.'"

Padma then chimed in,

“She’s like, ‘You’re not going out in that,’ And she’s always telling me to dress more provocatively.”

Conversely, Padma Lakshmi feels like it's her job to advise her daughter to dress in a less revealing fashion at times,

“Some of your skirts are a little short for me, And a little short for you too, P.S.”

The former Top Chef alum went on to say she’s thankful to her daughter for trying to bring more of her own personality to the forefront in her public interactions,

“She doesn’t want me to be afraid to be who I am, because she thinks sometimes I’m very controlled. And she likes how I am with her when no one’s around.”

According to a report from The Hollywood Reporter, Padma Lakshmi has an intriguing television project currently in the works. She is set to host a cooking competition series for CBS with the working title of America’s Culinary Cup.
