Charlize Theron is opening up on joining Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey as Circe, alongside Matt Damon’s Odysseus. The actress was one of the last members of the cast to be confirmed and is all set to join the shoot in a few weeks. The filming is going on in Iceland as of now and will soon move to the United Kingdom, Scotland, and Ireland.

Speaking to Variety, Theron said,

I'm just going to talk to Chris about it and we'll see where it goes. It's super intimidating. I'm like the last one to show up. So I'll be like the new kid on the block and everybody will know what they're doing and not me.

She also mentioned that she read the epic poem a long time ago. It was written by Homer and is considered a classical piece of literature. Theron’s role is that of a sorceress who attacks Matt Damon’s Odysseus’ men while they visit her land of Aeaea. She then gets involved in a romantic relationship with the Ithacan and later becomes his guardian angel as he sets out on his journey home. The role is a small but significant in the story and in Greek literature and mythology.

More details about The Odyssey

After the success of Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is his next cinematic endeavor, bringing together a star-studded ensemble cast for the Greek epic. Based on Homer’s The Odyssey, the film stars Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, and Bill Irwin, among others. Damon plays the lead, Odysseus—the king of Ithaca who is coming back home after the Trojan War. Holland plays Telemachus, his son, and rumours claim Hathaway will be stepping in as Penelope, Odysseus’ wife.

The poem revolves around Odysseus’ odyssey as he struggles for years to return to his wife. Throughout the decade-long journey, he meets several gods and monsters, including Charlize Theron’s Circe and Pattinson’s Poseidon. On the other hand, the people of Ithaca, including Penelope and Telemachus, presume him dead and are faced with unsuitable suitors for the former’s hand. It is a much-loved piece of literature, and fans are looking to Nolan and his directorial prowess for a cinematic masterpiece to deliver a compelling adaptation.

The Odyssey is being made on a budget of $250 million—Nolan’s highest yet—and is being shot in parts of Morocco, Greece, Italy, Los Angeles, Iceland, the United Kingdom, Scotland, and Ireland. Made entirely on IMAX, it brings Nolan back together with cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema. Ludwig Göransson is working with the film’s music and costumes are being designed by Ellen Mirojnick.

More details on The Odyssey are awaited for now.
