Ray J, Kim Kardashian, and her mother, Kris Jenner, found themselves back in the spotlight after the Kardashians filed a defamation lawsuit against the singer.

In a livestream that later circulated widely through the Instagram account livebitez, Ray J claimed he would no longer accept money to stay quiet about the family.

“It’s all about telling the truth, like I can't keep getting paid to tell a lie," he said during the broadcast.

He also alleged mistreatment, adding,

"They acting like, it's okay to tell me whatever you want to tell me and treat me like I'm your slave."

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Kim Kardashian and Jenner accused him of defamation after he suggested in a video that they were engaged in a criminal enterprise and facing a possible federal indictment. Court filings show that the 13-page complaint, lodged in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, came shortly after Ray J told his followers he was cooperating with prosecutors on a RICO case connected to the reality TV stars.

The women, whose show built the foundation of what Jenner has described as “amazing businesses that became super successful,” have seen their combined net worth climb past $2 billion.

Court papers obtained by The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Kim Kardashian and Kris Jenner accused Ray J of waging a decades-long vendetta against them. They claimed that his latest allegations, which linked the pair to a federal racketeering case, went too far and could ruin their reputations.

The filing revisited Kardashian’s past with the R&B singer, noting their 1990s romance and the infamous s*x tape that shot her to fame. Their lawyer, Alex Spiro, said that history remained at the heart of Ray J’s behavior.

“Unable to accept the end of his fleeting relationship with Ms. Kardashian over 20 years ago, Ray J has repeatedly sought to attach himself to Plaintiffs’ names and exploit their prominence for personal gain,” the lawsuit read.

The lawsuit also highlighted Ray J’s appearance in the TMZ documentary on Sean “Diddy” Combs, who was acquitted of a federal RICO case, but found guilty of other charges, such as pro*titution this summer. During the program, which aired on Tubi, Ray J quipped,

“If you told me the Kardashians were being charged for racketeering, I might believe it.”

The Kardashians’ attorneys said the remark was “designed to plant the seed” that the women were under investigation.

The lawsuit also referenced a September 24 livestream featuring Chrisean Rock, on which Ray J reiterated his claims.

“The feds are coming, there’s nothing I can do about it. It’s worse than Diddy,” he told viewers.

According to the complaint, he offered no evidence to support the allegation. The filing described his remarks as “blatantly false” and stated:

“No such federal investigation exists; no law enforcement agency has initiated any criminal proceedings or investigations related to racketeering charges against Ms. Kardashian or Ms. Jenner; and no credible evidence whatsoever supports these inflammatory allegations.”

Nearly two decades after their split, Kim Kardashian and Ray continued to be linked through the infamous s*x tape that reshaped Kardashian’s public image. The two dated from 2002 to 2006, and during a 2004 trip to Cabo, they filmed the footage that would later ignite a media storm.

It wasn’t until 2007 that the video surfaced, with Vivid Entertainment distributing it under the title Kim Kardashian Superstar. At the time, Kardashian’s attorney Steven Kurtz filed suit in an attempt to stop its release, but the effort proved unsuccessful. The tape was officially released in March 2007, and Kardashian settled the case the following month.

In 2022, The Cut reported that the tape resurfaced in public conversation after being referenced in the first episodes of The Kardashians. That prompted Ray to allege publicly that Kardashian and Kris Jenner were behind its initial release.

Vivid founder Steven Hirsch disputed that version of events in a 2017 interview with Page Six. He explained that the deal required signatures from both Kardashian and Ray J and reportedly paid them $5 million, but he said Kardashian resisted until the very end.

“It was a very difficult deal to get done. Probably [the hardest deal we’ve done]. [Kim] did not want it to happen,” Hirsch recalled.

When Kim Kardashian’s romance with Pete Davidson went public in early 2022, hopes of reconciliation with Kanye West (also known as Ye) faded. Around that time, Ye began a wave of Instagram activity, including an interview with Hollywood Unlocked.

In the interview, Ye claimed he had retrieved a laptop from Ray the night before Kardashian’s appearance on SNL. He alleged that the device held material tied to the s*x tape and said Kim cried when he presented it to her.

“It represents how much she’s been used. It represents how much people didn’t love her and they just saw her as a commodity,” Ye said.

Ray’s camp offered little response. His manager released a short statement saying he “will not be discussing or addressing the past.”
