During an April 30 appearance on the IMO with Michelle Obama and Craig Robinson podcast, Marlon Wayans looked back at his initial reaction to his 24-year-old trans son Kai's transition.
Marlon Wayans, alongside his brother Damon Wayans, was discussing parenting advice with the former First Lady when he said,
"When he went through the transition, I actually went through the transition. I went from denial to complete acceptance, and it took me a week to get there."
He also joked, saying that he believes only "God can judge" if transitioning was a mistake, and said,
"If that's a mistake and we get to heaven and God don't let my child in, I'm going to shave a beard and sneak them in through the back. I'm going to love my baby...I'm a father, and I'm always going to defend them. I'm always going to protect them. I'm always going to respect them. And there's nothing nobody could ever tell me."
Marlon Wayans has shown public support for Kai and announced his transition initially during a November 2023 episode on The Breakfast Club radio show. Wayans shared that his daughter, Amai, had "transitioned into a son." He said that he could talk about his transition rather than his son's and discuss how he went from "ignorance and denial to complete unconditional love and acceptance."
"Luckily he ain't been relevant since 2007" - Marlon Wayans reacts to Soulja Boy's transphobic slur against his son
Earlier on February 12, Marlon Wayans took to X after Soulja Boy, in a since-deleted tweet, called his son, Kai, a transphobic slur. Wayans posted the screenshot of the tweet, where Soulja had shared two headlines related to Wayans being supportive of his son and asked if it was something that "run(s) in the family."
"If @souljaboy had a career he could get cancelled for this type of slander. Lucky he ain't been relevant since 2007."
In another September 2024 interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Wayans, when asked what he had learned through Kai's transition experience, said,
"I learned that I'm a lot stronger than I thought I was. I learned that my family - my brothers, my sisters - have prepared me to be a rock in our family."
Elsewhere, he also revealed that he has a "contract" with his kids, where he notes that whatever they do in their lives, it's a possibility that he's going to "find some humor and talk about it."
