A Minecraft Movie turned the iconic pixelated world of Minecraft into a blockbuster film. Directed by Jared Hess and produced by Warner Bros. It follows four eccentric residents of Chuglass, Idaho, who accidentally tumble into a portal and awaken in a cubic universe. It wasn’t until 2022 that the project finally took shape, with Jared Hess stepping in to direct and Jason Momoa entering talks to star. Legendary Entertainment joined as co-producer, while Chris Bowman and Hubbel Palmer were brought on to rework the script alongside Allison Schroeder. Principal photography began in January 2024 in New Zealand and wrapped in April.
Featuring colorful cameos from YouTubers DanTDM, Aphmau, LDShadowLady, and Mumbo Jumbo, A Minecraft Movie appearing as familiar faces from the community. The film also included a tribute to the late creator Technoblade and highlighted elements of the game’s humor and creative design. A sequel is already on the way, set to release on July 23, 2027.
