James Gunn is addressing a very important question DC fans have had ever since he announced Man of Tomorrow. The first film had Lex Luthor as a brilliant antagonist who stole the show just as much as Superman. Now speculations have surfaced about who will be leading Man of Tomorrow, and fans have been making a few guesses.
Many pointed out theories that Brainiac could be the next villain in DC, pointing at several Easter Eggs like a Brainiac illustration in one of the early Superman story boards. Another hint dropped was dropped by Gunn himself as he talked about how Brainiac was one of his initial choices for the villain in Superman.
However, the biggest push came as the director shared a photo of Man of Tomorrow's first script, and on the first page there was an image of a human brain, which many saw as an indication that Brainiac will be a part of the film. After much speculation, Gunn is finally addressing these claims, and talking about if Brainiac will actually be a part of the film.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn tells the outlet,
"Listen, of course I wasn't unaware that when I posted the cover of the script that there was going to be discussion around that particular topic. But I think we'll hold off from what exactly is happening."
Although it's a vague answer, it's also not a direct rejection of the idea, which means there must be some truth to the speculations of course. As he continues to work on the film, revealing more about the sequel, we will certainly know more in due time.
Everything we know about Man of Tomorrow
James Gunn is wasting no time in building out his new DC Universe, and he has already revealed a lot about his next big chapter. His follow-up to Superman now has a title, a release date and some tantalizing details already and from everything we know, it's going to be another grand chapter.
For starters, Gunn has insisted that Lex and Superman are equal protagonists in this film. Which suggests that the duo might team up against someone, reluctantly working together. The director has teased that they would be working against “against a much, much bigger threat,” adding, “It’s more complicated than that. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie.”
Production on the film is set to be in in April 2026, with Gunn calling the writing process much easier than the first film. David Zaslav has confirmed that Gunn will be writing and directing once again, making things even more exciting.
Man of Tomorrow is all set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
