James Gunn's DCU is moving at a steady pace, with one film and one series already out, it's marching forward towards some interesting projects and highly awaited characters' on-screen debuts. With development on Supergirl almost finished, updates on Man of Tomorrow and small steps being taken for various other characters, the DC roster is all set to be renewed and rebuilt, with legacy characters, underrated heroes and stories that have been waiting to see the light of the day for years.

Among these, Gunn has given fans news on most of the projects he has been working on, and the director has just given a cryptic update on The Authority, which fans have been waiting for quite some time. In an interview with Deadline, Gunn finally opened up on the development status on the project, with a hopeful yet cryptic update.

Speaking to the outlet, Gunn said,

"There’s someone who is a really good creator who talked to me the other day. I’m probably not going to do certain movies with characters who (audiences) don’t know; it’s harder to get people in the theater for that kind of thing."

This simply means more work needs to be done on the project, which he referred to as one of his hardest stories back in February. During a press event, Gunn said,

"I mean, honestly, Authority has been the one that's been the hardest, both because of the shifting overall story and because of getting it right in a world with The Boys and a world with all the things that The Authority influenced that came out after it, and also having a lot of characters that we've fallen in love with that we've already filmed and have that we want to continue their story to see them meet each other, and so it's been, I will admit it and say it's a little bit more on the backburner right now."

James Gunn’s near term DCU playbook is shaping up to be quite a dazzling roster, and as co chair and co CEO of DC Studios, he’s the point person shepherding the overall slate.

After rebooting Superman in 2025, Gunn is already shaping the sequel Man of Tomorrow and even teased a finished script page that sparked Brainiac speculation among fans. Peacemaker season 2 is being used as a narrative bridge, with a Lex Luthor cameo helping link the TV and film storylines. The Brave and the Bold, James Gunn’s planned Batman movie, remains in early development but he’s given timing updates and says it will arrive as part of his multi year rebuild.

James Gunn’s playbook is clear: sync TV and tentpole releases, tease scripts on social, and use cameos to seed bigger movie arcs, with Man of Tomorrow and Supergirl positioned to drive the next phase.

Bottom line: expect more crossovers, more deliberate teases, and a DCU rollout that leans into serialized storytelling rather than one off surprises.
