James Gunn is dropping more crucial details about the next chapter in the Superman saga, and this time he's opening up on who will have the spotlight in Man of Tomorrow. After announcing the title and release date through social media, the director is now dropping more narrative grenades about what fans can expect from the film.
On The Howard Stern Show, James Gunn revealed that Man of Tomorrow is not Superman centric and will instead focus on both the hero and the antihero of Superman. Discussing details of the film, Gunn said,
"It is a story about Lex Luthor and Superman having to work together to a certain degree against a much, much bigger threat. And it’s more complicated than that, but that’s a big part of it. It’s as much a Lex movie as it is a Superman movie.”
He then added that his aspirations for this collaboration stemmed from his love for Nicholas Hoult, who plays Lex Luthor in the film as he continued,
“I loved working with Nick Hoult, who played Lex; I relate to the character of Lex Luthor, sadly, so I really wanted to create something extraordinary with the two of them. Oh man, I just love the script so much; I’m excited for people to see the movie.”
More details about Man of Tomorrow
For James Gunn, Man of Tomorrow has been a part of his plans for a very, very long time. In August, the director talked about the Superman saga in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where he said,
“I’ve already finished the treatment for the next story in what I’ll call the ‘Superman Saga. I’m working on that and hopefully going into production on that not too far away from today.”
Not much is known as of now about the film's plot and details, but an eponymous movie came out in 2020, and explored Mark Waid’s Superman: Birthright. The film modernized Clark Kent's character and even had a cameo from Lobo (who is now being played by Jason Momoa). As announced before. Momoa is making his DC debut next year in Supergirl, so one can expect him to also show up for Man of Tomorrow.
Gunn’s Superman has already laid that groundwork. It didn’t just give us Clark, played by David Corenswet, Lois played by Rachel Brosnahan, and Lex played by Nicholas Hoult. It also introduced new heroes like Guy Gardner, Mister Terrific, and Hawkgirl, and knowing Gunn, they will certainly serve some purpose later on. By pulling Lex into the spotlight and hinting at a cosmic-scale threat, Man of Tomorrow could be the pivot point where all these pieces start snapping together.
Man of Tomorrow will reach theaters on July 9, 2027.
