James Gunn has shared a terrible piece of advice he received while he was working on the first Guardians of the Galaxy film. In a candid moment on social media, the director revealed how someone made the suggestion to replace the iconic 60s and 70s soundtrack in the film, for Britney Spears tracks.
Taking Threads to answer a fan's question on what's the worst note he has ever received, Gunn replied,
"I was told no one would like the Guardians soundtrack and I should change it to Britney Spears like 90's songs. I don't know if it's the worst but it's the one I remember the most!"
The music for Guardians of the Galaxy is actually a very crucial part of the film, as it's how Peter Quill, aka Star Lord reconnects with his mom who passed away years ago. In a 2014 interview with IGN, Gunn tells the outlet how the 80s soundtrack has much more relevance than fans think as he quipped,
"Those [songs] are cultural reference points. I knew that when we were making a movie that’s in outer space, you want to have it be this big grand adventure, but you also want to ground people in something that’s real, that seems familiar...The music and the Earth stuff is one of those touchstones that we have to remind us that, yeah, this is a real person from planet Earth who’s just like you and me. Except that he’s in this big outer space adventure."
In the end, the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack serves as a testament to the power of music in storytelling and the value of staying true to one's vision, even when faced with questionable advice.
More details about the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack
The soundtrack for Guardians of the Galaxy 1, which was called Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 became a cultural phenomenon shortly after it's release. The album is a collection of iconic songs that capture Quill's nostalgia and connection to Earth.
The soundtrack became a chart topping achievement as it became the first album composed entirely of previously released songs to reach number one on the US Billboard 200, spending eleven consecutive weeks atop the Billboard top soundtracks chart. It sold over 1.75 million copies in the United States alone, and became the second best selling soundtrack of the year, behind Disney's Frozen.
Some of the songs featured on the album were Blue Swede’s Hooked on a Feeling, The Jackson 5’s I Want You Back, David Bowie’s Moonage Daydream, Wichita Lineman by Glen Campbell and Mama Told Me (Not to Come) by Three Dog Night.
With that being said, it's a good thing that Gunn did not take that particular piece of advice as the album went on to have quite the success, thanks to his careful curation. Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1 is available to stream on all music platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and YouTube Music.
