Less than a week after its release, James Gunn's Superman has already created history in the DC universe with a skyrocketing box office report that has defied all expectations. Released on 11 July, the movie opened with a $122M domestic opening, bringing it to $217M globally. It is now the most successful Superman film ever made in the DCU, within just it's first week of release.

Talking about the film's success, Warner's global distribution president Jeff Goldstein said:

“What we always hoped to achieve with Superman was winning back the trust of our DC fans, and indeed they have enthusiastically embraced our first entry in an exciting new theatrical universe.”

Discovery CEO David Zaslav added:

“Superman is just the first step. Over the next year alone, DC Studios will introduce the films Supergirl and Clayface in theaters and the series Lanterns on HBO Max, all part of a bold ten-year plan. The DC vision is clear, the momentum is real, and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead.”

Superman is only the third film of the year to cross the $100M mark with its debut and is on its way to becoming one of the highest performing films of the year. Made on a budget of $225M before marketing costs, the film is James Gunn's first project after he was appointed as co-CEO of the studio, and with how the numbers are turning up, his reign looks promising.

James Gunn’s Superman launches not with origin flashbacks, but with Clark Kent already inhabiting Metropolis. He’s reporting at the Daily Planet, saving lives, and navigating public opinion after getting framed in a war between Boravia and Jarhanpur, an international crisis driven by Lex Luthor’s manipulations.

David Corenswet plays Clark with a blend of earnestness and weariness, strong, yes, but quietly questioning his place in the world. Rachel Brosnahan’s Lois Lane emerges as a fiercely intelligent journalist who already knows Clark’s secret, giving their relationship space to grow naturally rather than in cliché beats.

Nicholas Hoult is Lex Luthor, reimagined as a tech mogul orchestrating disasters, fake news campaigns, geopolitical upheaval, challenging Superman not just physically, but ideologically. His character draws on real-world power anxiety, delivering a cold and calculating counterpoint.

Supporting heroes like Skyler Gisondo’s Jimmy Olsen, Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific, Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern, Anthony Carrigan’s Metamorpho, and even Krypto add layers of camaraderie and serve as early connectives in Gunn’s new DC Universe.

At its center, this James Gunn movie imagines its hero not as a paragon of perfection, but as someone trying to do right in a world that questions him, even as he grapples with what that really means.
