James Gunn has shared another discreet glimpse at his upcoming film Man of Tomorrow, sharing a photo of a huge stack of storyboards for the film, that will be a sequel to Superman. Calling it "Storyboards sequence 3," he shared the image on Threads, as fans flooded the comment section with speculations, queries and more insights.
One fan asked Gunn in the comment section if every card seen in the image is a shot in the film, to which Gunn responded and said:
"No. Some shots take up more than one card because of movement in the shot."
Storyboards are usually organisers that consists of simple illustrations or images that gives you a brief visualizer of what the film sequence will look like. Previously Gunn has released sheets of the storyboard for Superman, that showed the audience a raw version of the sequences that made the film up.
As of now, the director has been pretty open about Man of Tomorrow, and everything he has planned for the sequel. With the success of Superman, fans have high hopes for the film, that is all set to reunite Clark Kent with his nemesis Lex Luthor, but in a new light.
More details about Man of Tomorrow
David Zaslav has teased Man of Tomorrow not as a direct sequel, but as the “next movie in the Super-Family." Which could mean that the film won't necessarily coninue with the events of Superman, but will feature the same characters and will most probably bear some relevance to the story.
In a past interview with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn had spoken about doing a sequel for Superman, where he said:
"What I'm working on is in some way…I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes. But is it a straight-up Superman sequel? I would not say necessarily."
Early artwork and teasers suggest a shift in dynamics. Lex Luthor may find himself fighting alongside Kal-El rather than against him. Gunn’s concept appears to reimagine the Superman-Luthor rivalry, with the two characters forced into an uneasy alliance against a far greater threat.
But the central mystery revolves around the film’s villain. Gunn’s social media posts, particularly a script cover featuring an anatomical brain illustration, have sparked fan speculation that Brainiac might take center stage. The director had already teased that he considered making Brainiac the villain for the first film so yes, we might finally be getting an on-screen version of the iconic DC antagonist.
Man of Tomorrow promises more than spectacle, it’s about defining who truly deserves the title. Is it Superman, the beacon of hope who has protected Metropolis for three years, or Luthor, the brilliant and ruthless billionaire who believes humanity should guide its own future? Fans may get their answers soon, as the film is all set to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
More details on Man of Tomorrow are awaited for now.
