James Gunn just fired back at every rumor swirling around The Batman 2, calling the so-called “leaks” nothing more than fan fiction. From whispers about characters to claims of Robin’s big debut, Gunn dropped the truth bomb that only a select few have even laid eyes on Matt Reeves’ freshly finished script, and the rest is just internet static.
Responding to a Threads post that talked about Robin's inclusion in The Batman 2, Gunn replied:
"Guys please stop believing this nonsense. I think six of us have read the script. No one knows anything about the Batman 2."
This comes days after he just cleared the air on Hush's feature in the Batman project as villain where he responded:
"Again everything you've heard is a total guess or made up."
With pre-production kicking off in spring 2026 and an October 1, 2027 release locked in, Gunn’s message is simple: until Warner Bros. speaks, the Bat-signal for The Batman 2 stays dark.
What we know so far about The Batman 2?
Warner Bros. Discovery just dropped some major news: The Batman 2 is officially gearing up to roll cameras in spring 2026, with fans set to catch Robert Pattinson’s next Dark Knight adventure hitting theaters on October 1, 2027. This announcement came as part of a shareholder letter celebrating James Gunn’s Superman smashing the box office with over $560 million worldwide.
But that’s just the start, WBD CEO David Zaslav teased a DC universe bursting with fresh energy, with Gunn already crafting scripts for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow and Clayface (both arriving in 2026), plus the next Wonder Woman film.
The statement read:
“James Gunn is already preparing to write the next installment in the Super family. In film, James Gunn is busy preparing the next installments of the DC super family, including Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2026), Clayface (2026) and the next Wonder Woman. In addition, The Batman II (2027) is preparing to begin shooting next spring, among several other projects in development. The 10-year vision for the DC universe also includes an exciting array of television projects, including The Penguin, the upcoming new season of ‘Peacemaker,’ and the debut of ‘Lanterns’ in 2026. In a precise and measured way, the DC franchise will increasingly overlay across the studio’s broader efforts: from film and TV to consumer products, games, experiences and social.”
Alghough the wait for the film has been lengthy, James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, defended the wait, reminding everyone that epic sequels often take years to craft, think Alien or Top Gun.
The director took to Threads last year to address the delay and wrote:
“To be fair, a 5 year gap or more is fairly common in sequels. 7 years between Alien and Aliens. 14 years between Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, 6 years between Guardians Vol 2 and Vol 3.”
The script is set, and in about two years Gotham’s next chapter will be brought to life. Gotham fans, buckle up, the wait is almost over.
