Jenna Ortega is getting candid on the perils of social media for the upcoming generations.
The Wednesday actress, 22, spoke to the BBC in an interview that came out on Wednesday, July 30, about how people nowadays don't talk in person, and instead rely on "interacting and finding their community online," which she says "can be very isolating."
The actress who was cast as Ellie in You Season 2 noted that social media exposes people to "so many voices and so many opinions."
"Much more than you would typically be, or that humans are kind of meant to be exposed to," she said. "So I think it's harder to find a sense of self. Young people are struggling to find, 'What makes my voice stand out? What is it about me in this world and this society today that gives me a sense of purpose or control or authority?'"
Back in August, the actress echoed the negative sentiments on social media when she spoke to The New York Times. At the time, she recounted logging on to Twitter as a child, only to be met with negativity:
“I hate AI," she said. "... Did I like being 14 [years old] and making a Twitter account because I was supposed to, and seeing dirty, edited content of me as a child? No. It's terrifying. It's corrupt." She continued, “It's wrong. It's disgusting...Here's the problem, though. We've opened Pandora's box. Well, it is what it is. It's out there now. We're gonna have to deal with the consequences.”
The actress has 37.3 million followers on Instagram and only 93 posts as of this writing. She sporadically uploads photos on the platform, if only to promote her films and projects. Several of her posts from this week were related to the second installment of Wednesday.
What to expect from Wednesday Season 2 and Jenna Ortega's staggering salary hike explored:
Jenna Ortega, who is slated to reprise her role as the titular character for season 2 of the hit Netflix show Wednesday, also opened up about what she thought was nice about the ’70s era:
“I wasn’t around in the ’70s, but I hear stories of people knocking on their neighbors’ doors and the bikes going all throughout the city, and just expecting to meet someone at a certain time on a certain location,” Jenna Ortega said, before comparing it to contemporary society: “People don’t talk to each other in person. They’re interacting and finding their community online, which can be very isolating.”
The Beetlejuice Beetlejuice actress then linked these issues to her own show, noting that the very reason people are drawn to the Addams Family’s eccentricity is because they seek connection:
“There’s great comfort in seeing people who are so obviously themselves, freely, and place priority where it matters, and that’s your family, that’s who’s in front of you, your special interests, that’s your strength and your courage and your confidence in your voice,” Jenna Ortega explained. “It’s very easy now to get swept up in some sort of sheep mentality, and I think it’s so important for young people to see this family now more than ever.”
Wednesday Season 2's premiere was held in London on July 30. The first installment of the Tim Burton-directed show earned the title of Netflix's second most-watched show, trailing Squid Game, as it raked in a staggering 252 million views.
The first four episodes of the new season are set to drop on Wednesday, August 6, with the second half to follow suit on September 3. Season 1 is currently available to stream on the platform.
Several of the original characters are set to reprise their roles, including Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán. New additions include Steve Buscemi and Lady Gaga, who will be making a cameo.
Indulgeexpress has reported that for the upcoming season, Jenna Ortega's salary has seen a staggering hike. For season 1, she reportedly earned $30,000 per episode, which adds up to $240,000 for all eight. However, for the new season, she is reportedly expected to rake in $250,000 per episode, which totals to $2 million.
Since her work on Wednesday in 2022, Jenna Ortega has earned several more credits, including on projects like Scream VI and Tim Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, where she starred alongside Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara.
