R&B singer Dawn Robinson says she’s been homeless and living out of her car for the past nearly three years, and music producer Jermaine Dupri recently raised an eyebrow about her claims.
The New Jersey native, who was the original member of the girl group En Vogue, found herself living in her car and began typing how she ended up doing car life on YouTube. But Dupri questioned the authenticity of her effort, noting that Robinson supposedly has an assistant while struggling financially.

Dawn Robinson Shares Her Experience of Living in a Car
Dawn Robinson, who's best known as a member of En Vogue, opened up about being homeless on the streets for a little over three years, revealing on Instagram that she has been living out of her car since 2020.
She said this shift occurred after she left her parents’ house in Las Vegas for personal reasons. At first, she stayed in a hotel for months, then adopted a nomadic lifestyle inspired by the “car life” movement, in which people live voluntarily in vehicles for a number of reasons, including saving money and enjoying personal freedom.
In her video, she also stated that her experience is not designed to draw pity but rather is her own unique journey.
Robinson said her living situation is not ideal, but she does not consider herself completely homeless, and she suggests no matter where she is professionally, she’s in it for the long haul.

Jermaine Dupri’s Response and Concerns
Jermaine Dupri responded to Robinson’s claims during an Instagram Live session on March 13, saying he was doubtful about certain details of her story. At the heart of his worry was that Robinson was said to have an assistant (strange in light of her financial situation) and that she will have a financial advisor.
"Having an assistant is not something that you should even think about if you don’t have no money. It changed my whole vibe of what I was watching because ain’t no g*** way she got an assistant and she ain’t got no money."
Dupri’s comments imply that he considers her situation a lifestyle choice, not true homelessness.
Dawn Robinson’s Perspective
Dawn Robinson has yet to directly address Jermaine Dupri’s comments. But she stands by her story that it is a personal journey, not a sign of danger.

Though she has said that she understands why fans and the industry are concerned, she will not consider her experience a bad one. Rather, she sees this as an opportunity to find a different lifestyle and revisit her own health.
Conclusion: A Broader Conversation on Homelessness
Dawn Robinson’s experience and Jermaine Dupri’s comment show the complexities of modern homelessness and alternative living choices.

Ultimately, this gives rise to broader questions: How do we define homelessness? What is the role of personal choice? And how do people handle difficult circumstances differently?
