Fireworks can always be expected at the Tony Awards, and this year’s iteration of the ceremony was no different. Among the many moments that stood out throughout the course of the night, Jonathan Groff’s performance may just have been the boldest.
Groff was in attendance as he was nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical; the multitalented star also put on quite the show. As he performed a unique medley of songs about the life and career of singer Bobby Darin, Jonathan Groff crossed over from the stage to the audience.
He spotted Keanu Reeves, his Matrix Resurrections co-star, and stood atop the armrests of Reeves’ chair from the stage before reaching down and playfully grabbing at his friend mid-performance. An excited Reeves seemed thrilled at the impromptu move by Jonathan Groff, who then proceeded to jump off the arm rests and onto the ground before continuing his performance.
Jonathan Groff earns Tony nomination for Just In Time
This year, Groff was nominated for his fourth Tony award, having won in 2023 for his work in Merrily We Roll Along. He was also in the main cast of Hamilton, and has enjoyed several successful forays in television and film as well; the most notable credits on the list include: Frozen, Mindhunter, Glee, and Matrix Ressurections.
At this year’s awards he was recognized for his role in Just In Time, although the honours ultimately went to Darren Criss. The play however won a total of six Tonys and opened in April at Circle in the Square Theatre in N.Y.C.

Groff opened up about the significance of this particular nomination in May at a press event when speaking with a representative from PEOPLE,
“It's meant so much. We've been developing this Bobby Darin musical for eight years now. So to get six nominations for the show was just phenomenal and incredible. It's been such a long road to get here, and every night at the theater feels like a gift."
Reeves meanwhile, was at the show as a presenter. The crowd-favorite actor is set to make his Broadway debut alongside his Bill & Ted co-star Alex Winter in the upcoming revival of Waiting for Godot. The play from Irish writer and playwright Samuel Beckett focuses on two main characters who engage in a variety of discussions and encounters while awaiting the titular Godot, who never arrives.
