The Running Man star Glen Powell has a perfect reason behind him doing practical stunts in his action films, and it's all so the audience gets the value out of their ticket price. The actor is known for doing his own stunts, a page he took out of his Top Gun:Maverick co-star Tom Cruise's book. In a recent interview with The Guardian, Powell is now opening up on exactly why he chooses to do his own stunts.
Speaking to the outlet, the actor, who will next be seen in the action thriller The Running Man, said,
"It really sells it because if the audience know that you are in peril, there is an inherent investment. I believe you have to give the audience their value in the ticket. If people are actively going to the theatre, getting a babysitter, maybe doing dinner, you’ve got to justify that ticket price. And that’s what Tom always talks about – you have to have skin on the line. If they’re showing up for you, you’ve got to show up for them.”
He also opened up on his bond with Tom Cruise, as he talked about how the Mission Impossible actor was the first one he called after getting the role.
"The fact that Tom is such a close friend now – when I got Running Man, he was literally my first call. I said: ‘Dude, you’ve been doing this for decades.’ He has picked up every trick in the book. And he’s so generous – I thought I was going to talk to him for 10 minutes. He stayed on the phone for two hours plus.”
More details about The Running Man
Edgar Wright’s The Running Man reimagines Stephen King’s 1982 novel, with a pulse-pounding, darkly satirical edge. Co-written by Wright and Michael Bacall, the dystopian action thriller is a new adaptation rather than a remake of the 1987 film.
Produced by Simon Kinberg, Audrey Chon, and Nira Park, the film brings together a powerhouse cast including Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, Colman Domingo, Emilia Jones, Lee Pace, William H. Macy, Michael Cera, Daniel Ezra, and Jayme Lawson.
The ensemble cast features Colman Domingo as Bobby Thompson, the charismatic host of The Running Man, and Lee Pace as the relentless Hunter Evan McCone. Jayme Lawson portrays Ben’s wife Sheila, while Michael Cera appears as rebel ally Elton Parrakis. Emilia Jones stars as Amelia Williams, a civilian caught in the chaos, with William H. Macy as Molie Jernigan, a man who shelters Ben during his flight. The cast also includes Daniel Ezra, David Zayas, Katy O’Brian, Karl Glusman, and Martin Herlihy, alongside a photographic cameo of Arnold Schwarzenegger, reprising his legacy as the face on the film’s $100 bill.
The Running Man will be in theaters on November 14, 2025.
