There's a reason why K-pop Demon Hunters has been one of the most loved films this year on Netflix as director Maggie Kang is opening up about the creative process that went behind creating the protagonists of the film. Kang wanted to give us a superhero who looks and feels like the people who love them. Instead of the lone, untouchable savior, she built Huntr/x, a K-pop girl group that slays demons with choreography, catharsis and a whole lot of heart.

The director spoke to Deadline about how she saw the lack of female representation in Korean animated media and wanted to change that as she said,

" I saw an opportunity with our female characters to show a different kind of female superhero that I felt like I wasn’t seeing – messy and silly and funny, women who eat a lot and are just real and have struggles and flaws. But through friendship and understanding and defeating their inner demons – and the actual demons – and also inspiring others in the process, they are able to come out on top and somehow more complete.”

She then continued to talk more about how she made sure the film represented Korean culture and incorporated her own love for K-pop into the film, which ultimately ended up being a huge selling point for K-Pop Demon Hunters as she added,

“I started to think about other Korean things, and K-pop was added in...You know that when you go to a Kpop concert and everybody’s singing along, there’s just this really great energy that is able to cross cultural barriers. So as a huge Kpop fan, I wanted to celebrate that feeling in the film. And I really think that Kpop became this huge selling point for the movie.”

Rightly so, the film became one of the highest grossing theatrical releases for Netflix, earning the top spot on the streaming platform and becoming a cultural phenomenon with it's characters and music.
