Musician Kirk Franklin opened up about Kevin Hart’s hosting at the BET Awards. Franklin was a guest on The Breakfast Club on June 19, 2025. For the unversed, he not only won the Ultimate Icon Award but also led the All-Star Gospel Finale at the 2025 BET Awards.

As the conversation continued, podcast host DJ Envy noted that the camera kept showing Franklin’s face every time Kevin Hart cracked a joke. He claimed that the Gospel musician did not seem too happy at the jokes. However, according to Franklin:

“It was so good, those jokes. It was so good. He's good. He's hilarious. But then I'll also give you this side and you know and I won't even cap right is, I think that the biggest thing is for me is that I always have to be careful because.”

Kirk Franklin added:

“I know that there's a community of the super religious that if I enjoy something too much then it comes across like well why he not praying for him. He need to walk out he and so there's this dichotomy that you live in when you say that you represent faith, that it's like I love Jesus but I'm not Jesus.”

Kirk Franklin explained that he lived in a real world where funny things happened, and he reacted like anyone else. He didn’t pretend to be flawless. When something was genuinely funny, he wanted to laugh.

DJ Envy asked how he managed not to laugh while Kevin Hart kept the jokes coming, to which Franklin replied that it was tough because Kevin Hart was both hilarious and talented, making it hard to keep a straight face.

Kirk Franklin on feeling nervous and treating each performance like his first

When host DJ Envy asked how he felt being honored at the award ceremony, Franklin said he was nervous, which took others by surprise. When asked what made him nervous, Kirk Franklin said:

“I think that it has served me well is because it's never normal. I'm never comfortable. I'm always wanting to do my best. I'm always concerned about every moment you know, will it be good enough? will it be accepted? will it be light? and so there's never a moment where I'm ever dialing anything in.”

Kirk Franklin shared that he felt nervous with every project, whether it was an album, a song, or a live moment. He treated each experience like it was his first, as if he were a brand-new artist still trying to prove himself. For him, it was often about chasing approval or recognition he missed out on during childhood.

He even admitted that just before going on stage at the BET Awards, he felt like he was on the verge of losing control under the pressure.

When DJ Envy asked how he felt about non-traditional gospel songs and artists like GloRilla winning in the gospel category, Kirk Franklin responded by saying his main focus was on spreading his faith and the message of Jesus.

He explained that he was more concerned with sharing the message of God's love and salvation than getting caught up in debates.
