Jennifer Lawrence's upcoming film Die My Love which is backed by Martin Scorsese came after he was impressed by her performance in Mother!, a role that has been widely considered one of Lawrence's best on screen. In an interview with The New Yorker, the actress opened up on how she and Scorsese teamed up, and how Kate Chopin's Awakening had an influence on the film.
The outlet reported that the director, who is serving as the film's producer, saw Lawrence in The Mother! and called her "amazing." Further praising her performance, he added,
“She really is feeling everything that’s happening, in what appears to be a dream of some kind,”
As for Die My Love, the duo sat down to discuss Kate Chopin's The Awakening, drawing parallels to the book's protagonist Edna Pontellier and Larence's role in the film. Talking about how he pushed her to take a chance with the role, he continued,
“Die, My Love” was like “The Awakening” if it began with Edna already underwater. I said, ‘You know what? This is a challenge. This is the kind of thing you should be doing. Go take a chance. Knock any sense of a comfortable character off the board and just go for it.’ ”
More details about Die My Love
Die My Love, directed by Lynne Ramsay brings the director back to the bigscree after eight long years since You Were Never Really Here. The film is co-written by Ramsay, Enda Walsh, Alice Birch, and reimagines Ariana Harwicz’s 2012 novel Matate, amor.
Jennifer Lawrence stars as Grace, a young mother whose attempt at a tranquil life with her partner Jackson, played by Robert Pattinson, curdles into psychosis. Their escape from New York to Jackson’s childhood home in Montana is meant to bring peace, but it instead unravels Grace’s mind. As her postpartum depression deepens, her marriage twists into something unstable, violent, and darkly funny, a “bonkers love story,” as Ramsay herself described it.
The project began in 2022 when Martin Scorsese, after reading Harwicz’s novel in his private book club, sent it to Jennifer Lawrence and her producing partner Justine Ciarrocchi at Excellent Cadaver. Scorsese envisioned Lawrence for the lead role and initially discussed adapting The Awakening with her, but the two chose Die My Love for its rawness. Ramsay joined after Lawrence insisted she direct, despite Ramsay’s hesitation to revisit the postpartum themes she’d explored in We Need to Talk About Kevin. Together, they reframed it into a delirious tragicomedy about identity, motherhood, and rage.
Die My Love premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, and was also nominated for the Palme d'Or. The film is all set to release in theaters on November 7.
