Lena Dunham gets candid about her final 'affair' before marriage

Writer and director Lena Dunham has recently opened up about her final “affair” before she got married. Dunham, who is widely known for writing and creating HBO’s highly rated and popular TV show Girls, has written a guest essay for British Vogue. In it, she discusses her last romance and the experience of dating before she tied the knot with British musician Luis Felber in 2021.

The 39-year-old Lena Dunham, who is also an actress and producer, met Felber in London. They were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend. Before meeting Felber, she was in a romantic relationship with American record producer and singer-songwriter Jack Antonoff. They dated for six years, from 2012 to 2018.

The Tiny Furniture actress, Lena Dunham, is currently busy promoting her upcoming Netflix rom-com series Too Much, which is scheduled to be released on July 10, 2025. She co-wrote and co-created the series with her husband, Luis Felber.

However, getting back to her brand-new essay for British Vogue, which details her last affair before marriage, it begins with:

"You really never know when you’re having your last affair. Some of us hope that every frog we kiss is our happy ending, while others stand hand in hand with their soulmate, still terrified of the vista narrowing, the buffet running out, closing time."

As Dunham’s essay continues, she talks about her mystery man, whom she met in Los Angeles. The essay goes on:

"I met Craig in a backyard in LA, in the halcyon days of the pandemic. He was sitting in a folding chair with his mask on, ankles crossed in perfectly worn Vans."

Lena Dunham, in her Vogue essay, further explains:

"But when he lowered his mask – Covid restrictions were only just lifting – to take a sip of water, I felt my stomach flip-flop. It was something about the golden symmetry of his face, the position of his pillowy mouth in relation to his strong yet cherubic nose, like they were selected right from a 'Brad Pitt facial features' catalogue."

The essay primarily sheds light on Lena Dunham’s connection with romance and dating, and how those experiences affected her creative side. In the essay, she discusses the last time she met her mystery man, Craig, in Santa Barbara, after which she had to move to the United Kingdom.

Dunham’s upcoming series Too Much, which she co-created with her husband Felber, is somewhat based on her experience. It draws from her move to the UK from New York City, where she was born and raised. London is also the place where she first met Luis Felber. Reflecting on their early connection, Dunham writes:

"Equally chastened and enlightened by the Craig of it all, I would ask this man hard questions, and I would really hear him when he answered, slowly and deliberately, sometimes telling me things he knew I wouldn’t want to hear, but doing it anyway (which I’ve come to think is love)."

Dunham’s reflections not only offer a glimpse into her personal life but also highlight how past experiences shaped her journey toward lasting love.
