Blue neighborhood alien is back again because Lilo & Stitch has just been confirmed for a sequel. Disney's latest live-action project brought in significant success for the studio after a few futile and paused projects. The remake of the 2002 animated film, starring Maia Your friendly, favorite Kealoha as Lilo and Chris Sanders as Stitch, became the third highest-grossing film of the year, and Disney has just greenlit a sequel.

The news was announced on July 26, a reference to Stitch's government name Experiment 626, which showed a short clip of Stitch driving around a pink convertible around Disney Studios, with the car's track spelling out the film's name and a large, glowy 2. The post is captioned,

Should’ve known he couldn’t keep a secret. A 626 day surprise: #LiloAndStitch 2 is now in development!

Lilo & Stitch is among Disney's successful live-action films, after the studio's immense success with live-action films like Aladdin, Cinderella, and The Lion King.

Lilo & Stitch marks Disney’s latest dive into live-action reimaginings, blending CGI with real-world charm to retell its 2002 animated sci-fi tale. Produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Rideback, the film is directed by Dean Fleischer Camp and scripted by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright and Mike Van Waes. It is inspired by not just the original animated movie, but also by its sequels and television spinoffs.

Set against the lush backdrop of Kauai, the story follows six-year-old Lilo Pelekai, played by newcomer Maia Kealoha, whose quiet island life is upended when she adopts Stitch, a blue alien experiment on the run, mistaken at first for a dog. Stitch is voiced once again by Chris Sanders, the original film’s co-creator. Sydney Elizabeth Agudong steps into the role of Nani, Lilo’s fiercely protective sister. The cast includes Zach Galifianakis as Jumba, Billy Magnussen as Pleakley, Courtney B. Vance as Cobra Bubbles, Amy Hill as Tūtū, and original stars Tia Carrere and Jason Scott Lee in new roles.

The film was shot in Hawaii in July 2023 and was made on a budget of just $100 million. Industrial Light & Magic contributed to the film's visual effects, and Stitch was brought to life by both CGI and live-action performances. Although it was initially a children's film, the film holds a PG rating.

Lilo & Stitch has a runtime of 108 minutes and premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on May 17, 2025. It had its theatrical release on May 23 and opened to generally positive reviews. The soundtrack of the film is brought alive by Dan Romer and includes multiple performances by Elvis Presley.

At the box office, the film pulled in $914 million globally, including an $183 million Memorial Day opening, ranking third among 2025’s top-grossing films. Rotten Tomatoes currently lists the film with a 71% critic score.
