English actor Nicholas Hoult played the role of Lex Luthor in the 2025 sci-fi movie Superman, awaiting release in July 2025. However, during a recent conversation with guest host Diego Luna on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Coult mentioned that he initially auditioned for the titular character’s role, which was eventually given to David Corenswet.

While discussing director James Gunn’s work in the film, Luna noted that the two auditioned for the same role. Nicholas Hoult said:

“This is very awkward. I auditioned for Superman at the same time.”

He remembered seeing David Corenswet in the studio. According to Hoult:

“I walked over to say hello and he stood up and I was like god damn, he's about an inch taller than me. Look at his hair, look at his jawline. And then he started speaking. I shook his hand and I was like his hands are a bit bigger than me and then he spoke and I was like, ‘Oh his voice is a little bit deeper too.’”

He went on:

“And in that moment whilst we were shaking hands I was like I'd be happy if this guy was Superman I was like you're perfect for it really genuinely.”

David Corenswet shared that he had looked up to Nicholas Hoult as an actor for a long time. When he later learned that Nicholas had agreed to play Lex Luthor, he felt it was one of the best aspects of the movie.

He believed that a superhero film is only as compelling as its villain, and he was confident Nicholas would bring real depth to the role.

Nicholas Hoult complimented David Corenswet’s dynamic performance in the film

Diego Luna pointed out that although they had many scenes together in Superman, Nicholas Hoult and David Corenswet weren’t always filming in the same place.

Nicholas joked that he preferred being away from David but then sincerely said David was a generous and thoughtful actor who engaged with the material, making scenes enjoyable even when they weren’t physically together.

When asked about David Corenswet’s work in the film, Nicholas Hoult said:

“I just love the script that James wrote. It's such a fresh new take on this character and seeing what David did on set and then seeing it on screen, he's such a wonderful Superman he's so charismatic.”

Hoult went on:

“He gives it such dynamism and it’s a wonderful interpretation of the character so I'm very proud to be able to be in the movie with him as Superman because you know it's a new Superman for a new generation and he's done a wonderful job as that character.”

Corenswet added that he hadn’t seen the finished movie yet and was saving that experience for the premiere. He said he was excited to watch it for the first time with a big crowd, especially because he hadn’t seen any of Nicholas Hoult's scenes during filming and wanted to enjoy them as a viewer.
