It's been three years since Glen Powell teamed up with the likes of Tom Cruise, Miles Teller and Monica Barbaro for Top Gun: Maverick, and from what the actor is telling fans, the friendship is still as strong as ever. The film had an ensemble cast with a roster of big names and according to Powell, they're all on good terms and the group chat is very much alive.

Speaking to People about keeping in touch with his co-stars, Powell says:

"Sometimes I'll get a little information every once in a while from the gang. The Top Gun chain is alive with congratulations to each other, about sort of movie openings or nominations, or whatever it is."

He then gave the fans quick updates on Teller and Barbaro's careers as he added:

"Miles' movie doing really well, Monica getting nominated for an Oscar. Everybody is getting to do all these really wonderful, cool things, so it's a lot of congratulations...I genuinely love all those guys."

More than three decades after he first blazed across our screens, Captain Pete Maverick Mitchell returns again for Top Gun: Maverick, helmed by Joseph Kosinski and written by Ehren Kruger, Christopher McQuarrie, and Eric Warren Singer. With an impressive ensemble of stars, who Maverick is tasked with training as they star as a new generation of Top Gun pilots, the film sees him join Lieutenant Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, portrayed by Miles Teller, the son of Maverick’s late best friend Goose. Then there's Jennifer Connelly as Penny Benjamin, Maverick’s rekindled love, while Jon Hamm’s Vice Admiral Cyclone and Ed Harris’s Hammer embody the brass who doubt him.

The supporting cast includes Glen Powell’s cocky Hangman, Monica Barbaro’s as Phoenix, Lewis Pullman as Bob, Jay Ellis as Payback, Danny Ramirez as Fanboy, Greg Tarzan Davis as Coyote, Manny Jacinto as Fritz, Raymond Lee as Yale, Jake Picking as Harvard, Jack Schumacher as Omaha, and Kara Wang as Halo. Val Kilmer, in his poignant final role, returns as Admiral Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, Maverick’s steadfast friend.

Behind the scenes, the journey to this film was as turbulent as its dogfights. Paramount announced the sequel in 2010 with Tony Scott set to direct, but his death in 2012 stalled production. Kosinski revived the project in 2017, shooting with IMAX-certified 6K cameras across California, Washington, and Maryland. Delays piled on due to the film’s complex aerial stunts and then the COVID-19 pandemic, but Cruise refused streaming offers, insisting on a theatrical release.

When it finally premiered at CinemaCon on April 28, 2022, before hitting theaters on May 27, the gamble paid off. Critics hailed it as superior to the original, AFI named it a top ten film of the year, and it secured six Oscar nominations, winning Best Sound. With $1.496 billion earned worldwide, Top Gun: Maverick became Cruise’s highest-grossing film, and remains one of the biggest parts of the franchise.
