Maks Chmerkovskiy conceded to being hard on some of his Dancing With the Stars partners because of how the show paid him.
Speaking exclusively with Us Weekly, Chmerkovskiy, 45, said:
“There’s definite ways to influence you to want to do your best and stay on and so I think that somebody like me, for example, that backfires. Sometimes that competitiveness kicks in because on top of it, if I don’t keep making it week after week, I don’t get paid. And so now my time here becomes, like, ‘Now I’m wasting time.’”
Maks Chmerkovskiy, who is currently promoting his new vodka brand 'Kápa,' revealed that in all his time performing on the series as a pro for 15 seasons, it was his sole mission to make it to the semifinals so that he could get a “paycheck all 10 weeks.”
The American-Ukrainian ballroom dancer currently boasts a net worth of $8 million, Celebrity Net Worth has reported. According to the US Sun, he amassed considerable wealth during his career, having risen to fame for his contributions to the hit show.
Maks Chmerkovskiy first joined the show in 2006 during its second season, and is still working with them. He and his dance partner, Olympic gold medalist Meryl Davis, nabbed the trophy during the season 18 finale, marking his first win. He made it to the finals a total of five times.

“I don’t think I had a bonus. Maybe I didn’t. I dunno,” he said. “The thing you know is how busy you are, how completely engulfed in the show you are. Especially at that time, I was under so much pressure to, like, ‘Oh, you have to win.’”
He also recalled feeling extra competitive against Derek Hough, who is a six-time winner of the show and one of its current judges:
“Then you look over and there’s Derek with one of his best, most memorable partners of all time and she’s been performing fantastic,” Chmerkovskiy said, referencing Hough and Amy Purdy's partnership.
“And so there were a lot of things to that season as well. But Meryl was an incredible partner. And I think I was also at that time already ready to go all the way in that type of partnership,” he added.
According to The Things, Maks Chmerkovskiy is one of the top three richest stars of the show, trailing Julianne Hough, who has a net worth of $10 million, and Derek Hough, who also has a net worth of $8 million. He is known for having starred alongside Tia Carrere, Willa Ford, Denise Richards, and Amber Rose, among others.
During his interview with Us Weekly, Chmerkovskiy also said that he is someone who thrives with a strict regimen and does his best when he's paired with someone of a similar nature:
“That’s why some of these types of partnerships work. I had some incredible partnerships with people who were a certain type today,” he reflected. “Honestly, it’s whatever they want. They want to push themselves. They want to have a great time. They want to be athletically inclined. They want it to be more of a showmanship. It’s whatever you want, but I just want you to have a fantastic time.”
