Amanda Seyfried has chosen two Hollywood divas who could step into the world of Mamma Mia 3, and it's none other than stars Sabrina Carpenter and Sydney Sweeney. Seyfeied spoke to Entertainment Tonight about her vision for the third film in the franchise, and she thinks Carpenter could play Sophie's cousin and then Sweeney could join in as well.
Speaking to the outlet, the Mean Girls actress said,
“I love portraying a mom, so I would love to see Sophie with her kids. Maybe she has a cousin she hasn’t seen in a while, and that could be Sabrina Carpenter. And then Sydney Sweeney could show up. There’s a bunch of girls that really want to be a part of it, and I’m all for it.”
Previously the Espresso hitmaker was in talks to play Seyfried's daughter in the upcoming sequel, and fans were all up for it, considering Carpenter's vocal skills and stardom. Apart from being a Grammy-winning pop star, she started her career with acting, having worked on films like The Hate U Give, Tall Girl and Tall Girl 2, and the Disney series Girl Meets World and the animated show Sophie the First.
As for Sweeney, she has become a well known name in Hollywood, having led films like Immaculate, Anyone But You, Christy and the show Euphoria. As of now, she is all set to be seen alongside Seyfried herself in The Housemaid.
More details about Mamma Mia 3
Mamma Mia’s glitter-soaked universe is slowly warming up for another round, and the tease for Mamma Mia 3 is getting kind of delicious. For years, producer Judy Craymer has hinted that the musical series was always meant to form a trilogy. Back in 2020, she told the Daily Mail that a third movie was part of the long game and that Universal Pictures was already on board. Now, in May 2025, she has doubled down while speaking with Deadline and confirmed that the next chapter is in active development.
Seyfried also talked about what could happen in Mamma Mia 3 as she told ET,
“I just know the three dads are going to come back, and we still won’t know who the dad is because it doesn’t matter. Meryl [Streep] is a ghost, obviously, so she’ll be around. And Julie [Walters] and Christine [Baranski] will be back singing and looking hot and we’re all going to be somewhere tropical. And ABBA will be playing.”
Universal has not announced a release date yet, so fans are left waiting. Until then, the first two films will keep viewers dancing in their living rooms and dreaming about one more round of sunshine, sequins, and ABBA magic.
More details on Mamma Mia 3 are awaited for now.
