Man of Tomorrow is the forthcoming superhero film in the DC Universe. Written and directed by James Gunn, the film was initially rumored to be a sequel to his 2025 Superman movie.
However, the director has refuted this claim and stated that it's not a sequel to the 2025 film. However, the film will still feature the Man of Steel in a central role. Since becoming co-CEO of DC Studios, Gunn has spearheaded a major overhaul of the DCU. The series now has several films and television shows lined up that will be released in the coming years.
So let us find out more about the film and Gunn's comment.
James Gunn says Man of Tomorrow won't be a sequel to Superman
James Gunn recently took to social media to reveal that the forthcoming film Man of Tomorrow is not a sequel to Superman. A user named Daniel Richtman took to X (formerly Twitter) and asked Gunn,
"I'm a little confused right now. Is this the same movie you've talked about in the past, the one where you said Superman had a major role but wasn't exactly a sequel? Or is this a different movie, and this one is actually 'SUPERMAN 2'?"
The user was pointing to Gunn's announcement that David Corenswet will be reprising his role as the superhero in the next film. Gunn, in response, said:
"Yes, yes, sorry. This is the same movie. Superman has a major role. It's not 'Superman 2.'"
The film will also feature Lex Luthor, Lois Lane, and Metropolis. Gunn's comment makes it clear that the next film will have its own story. It will feature some similar characters, but it won't be a traditional sequel.
Man of Tomorrow will pick from Superman as the superhero has established himself as humanity's savior on Earth. Luthor unleashes chaos once more, joining forces with María Gabriela de Faría’s Engineer and an alternate version of Ultraman. All of them manage to invade the Fortress of Solitude.
The film will be released in the theatres by Warner Bros. Pictures on July 9, 2027. “Released in 2025, Gunn’s Superman starred David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, and Nathan Fillion. The DCU will also feature several television shows, including the second season of Peacemaker.
