Moriah Plath has opened up about being scrutinized online for her struggles with alopecia.
The Welcome to Plathville star took to her Instagram account this week to share two photos: one of her sporting a hat, and another of her wearing a scarf around her head. The 22-year-old wrote in the caption:
“I’m hesitant to share this cause it’s a vulnerable and sensitive thing for me. Many people have been criticizing the way I look, it’s nothing new to me and I’ve grown used to being picked apart since I was young for my style choices, hair choices and makeup choices… many of which were reasonable cause even I look back and am like goodness Moriah you look a bit crazy haha! But that’s life and the best part is having fun and not beating your younger self up.”
She said she has been struggling with alopecia — which can cause hair loss all over the body — her whole life, and “for the most part it’s been manageable.”
However, “a few months ago I lost all my hair, eyebrows and eyelashes again. It was extremely hard and emotional and I had to come to terms with it. I cried an awful lot and then told myself oh well, it is what it is. I’ll do what I can and make the most of it.” Plath continued, “I’m not very talented yet at wearing wigs and trying to draw my dang eyebrows on every day can be frustrating lol. I’m still trying to master that haha! So if I look a bit odd or different now that would most likely be why 🙈I’m learning to laugh where I can and cry when I need to and just accepting it.”
Moriah Plath has since been “stuck with the same black wig ’cause I wasn’t prepared for all the questions, but it is what it is now.”
Plath said that she’s “never had any cosmetic work done, besides Invisalign. I’m learning to love myself the way God made me, with or without hair.” Thus far, “it’s a continuous struggle,” she admitted, “but I’m getting there!” She concluded by noting “that our imperfections and insecurities are actually some parts of us that are most beautiful!” She added, “you never know what [someone is] going through and try to speak life and positivity cause they probably are harder on themselves then you are [on them]!”

Despite the challenges, Moriah Plath will be returning to Season 7 of Welcome to Plathville, which is expected to debut on July 22 on TLC. She has long been vocal about dealing with alopecia, having been diagnosed with it when she was just 3 years old.
In September last year, during an episode of the show, Moriah Plath reflected on the toll her breakup with ex Max Kallschmidt took on her:
“I left Tampa the last day of September and I was grieving, lost in heartbreak, and my hair started falling out,” she recalled. “I would brush my hair and it was just, like, [gone].”
The pair dated for a while, having broken up in February 2023 after Max cheated on Moriah Plath. After the debacle, she “definitely lost about half my hair,” making her want to buzz it all off.
“It started falling out and it didn't come back till I was 8,” Moriah Plath said of when she was three or four years old. “These last several months, I have noticed, for myself at least, heartbreak triggers my alopecia. I think that it's an outward reflection of what's going on inside.”
In an episode that same month, titled Life’s But a Walking Shadow …, Moriah Plath further spoke about the struggles of alopecia:
“When I was a little girl, when I was 3 years old, I lost all my hair for several years. Completely, not even eyebrows or eyelashes. I was completely bald,” Moriah Plath said in an emotional confession. "The doctors said it was alopecia but it was like a rare kind of alopecia cause it just all fell out immediately and came back years later," she added. “Everywhere I went, I was made fun of — by kids my age, (at) church, (by) my siblings. And that’s when I really started to see myself as different.”
She also revealed that growing up, she would ask family members to refrain from sharing photos of her online or discussing her condition out of insecurity.
"I just wanted to completely block that as something that happened to me," she said. "I would look myself in the mirror and I would say, 'You are ugly. Nobody will ever love you.'"
Moriah turned to fashion as a way to cope — something that still continues to help her on the bad days:
"That was the hardest thing I struggled with, with how I saw myself. But if I had the right hat, the right dress, if I had the right clothes on that made me look cuter, then I wouldn't be teased as much, And people would treat me differently or they'd treat me normally, what I thought was normally," she said. "Since then I've always been like that. I've always been like, "Well, today's a bad day. I'm gonna go change my outfit. It's always been like that and outfits have changed my life. If you have the right outfit on, you're gonna have a good day," Moriah Plath added.
Moriah Plath is the second of dad Barry and mom Kim Plath’s nine children. During her September 2024 episode, the television star revealed that she blamed them for not helping her with her alopecia. She acknowledged, however, that there was nothing they could do. She also acknowledged that they were “the only ones that actually told me I was beautiful,” she said at the time.
Welcome to Plathville airs on TLC every Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET.
