Martin Scorsese to adapt What Happens At Night
Martin Scorsese will reunite with Leonardo DiCaprio in the upcoming film adaptation of Peter Cameron's 2020 novel What Happens At Night. Deadline reports that Jennifer Lawrence will also star in the leading role. Production is scheduled to start in January next year, with Apple Original Films potentially teaming up with Studio Canal to produce the film.
The script was written by Patrick Marber after Studio Canal bought the rights. Initially, Scorsese was only attached as a producer, but that later changed. Apple had previously supported Scorsese and DiCaprio's Killers of the Flower Moon. The studio also has a deal with their production companies Sikelia and Appian Way.
What Happens At Night is a novel by Peter Cameron that centers on a couple traveling to a European town to adopt a baby. The wife is battling cancer, which the husband worries might prevent the orphanage from giving them the child. During their trip, they decide to stay at Borgarfjaroasysla Grand Imperial Hotel, where they meet several characters.
Scorsese's last directorial outing, Killers of the Flower Moon, was also an adaptation. It chronicled the murder of Osage family members following the discovery of oil on their tribal land.
