Tyler Hoechlin, best known for donning the cape in Superman & Lois, is now openly eyeing Gotham’s cowl. During a recent panel at Fan Expo Canada 2025, the actor revealed that while he admires Robert Pattinson’s performance in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, he would “selfishly” love the chance to play Bruce Wayne in James Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe.

Hoechlin stressed that he wasn’t trying to step on anyone’s toes, but suggested Warner Bros. and DC Studios should “maybe leave the door open” for his take on the Dark Knight.

As ScreenRant reported, addressing Robert Pattinson's Batman and if it fits into James Gunn's DCU, Tyler Hoechlin said,

"Well, selfishly, I'm going to say no because I still want to play Batman. I think and I say that Rob did a fantastic, fantastic job and [with] Matt Reeves it was great. So I'm happy to let them keep doing their thing, and maybe leave the door open..."

With James Gunn still shaping the future of the DCU and fan speculation at an all-time high, Tyler Hoechlin's comments have quickly sparked buzz about whether the former Superman could one day trade his cape for a cape and cowl of an entirely different kind. Although conversations are still active about Gunn's take on Batman, there have not been any confirmations as of yet.

Batman may be the world’s most popular superhero, but for DC Studios co-chief James Gunn, he’s also the trickiest puzzle piece in the entire rebooted DC Universe. Speaking to Rolling Stone in a June interview, Gunn admitted that Batman is his biggest issue in all of DC right now, highlighting the balancing act of creating a new Caped Crusader while Robert Pattinson’s version thrives in Matt Reeves’ The Batman saga.

Reeves’ universe, dubbed The Batman Epic Crime Saga, will continue with The Batman: Part II, though its release has been delayed to October 2027. That means fans face a long five-year wait between Pattinson’s outings, fueling rumors of cancellation. But Gunn quickly shot down these rumors, insisting Reeves is simply taking his time with the script.

Meanwhile, The Brave and the Bold is in “very active development,” and will serve as the DCU’s introduction to a brand-new Batman. The project has Andy Muschietti attached to direct, though Gunn and Peter Safran are focused on locking down the script before moving forward. There have been a few casting rumours, Tyler Hoechlin being the latest of them all, but none of it has been confirmed as of yet.

Most excitingly, Gunn hinted that this Batman will eventually share the screen with Superman, suggesting a long-awaited team-up is on the horizon. For now, though, Batman remains both DC’s biggest icon and, as Gunn admits, his “biggest issue.”

With Tyler Hoechlin's comments initiating more buzz about Batman in the DCU, more details on the hero are awaited for now.
