Miami Vice is getting a reboot, and it's helmed by Joseph Kosinski, who previously directed films like Top Gun: Maverick and F1.
The film is inspired by the first episode of the namesake crime drama television series that ran between 1984 and 1990 on NBC. Michael Mann, who was the producer of this show, later went on to direct its film adaptation that came out in 2006.
While the plot is kept under wraps, the film will focus on the corruption and glamorous side of Miami in the 1980s. The makers have recently unveiled that the film will be released on August 6, 2027.
Let us explore all the details about this forthcoming film.
Miami Vice reboot to release in 2027
Miami Vice will be released by Universal Pictures on August 6, 2027. Joseph Kosinski is directing the reboot, while the screenplay is written by Dan Gilroy and Eric Warren Singer. Kosinski is producing it with Dylan Clark, while Michael Mann and Anthony Yerkovich are serving as executive producers.
The film is currently in its casting stage, and production is slated to begin in 2026. It will be shot for the IMAX screens. The film's official synopsis says,
"[It] explores the glamour and corruption of mid-80’s Miami [and is] inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and set the style of everything from fashion to filmmaking.”
In a Collider interview, Kosinski spoke about doing the reboot. He said that he will be giving it a Star Wars treatment.
"Every other person who is my age, in 1985, when they were all looking at comic books or playing with Star Wars figures or Transformers toys, I was watching Miami Vice. For me, that television show is a very important part of me growing up and introduced me to the work of Michael Mann. I have a soft spot for that era, having grown up in it. I did not grow up in Miami, but I'm very excited about that. I don't want to say too much about it, but we're working on it now."
Kosinski has previously directed films like Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, Only the Brave, Top Gun: Maverick, Spiderhead, and F1. Maverick and F1 in particular turned out to be major commercial successes and catapulted him into stardom.
