As per a recent article by US Weekly, actress Michelle Williams recalls living with Ryan Gosling during the shoot of their indie hit Blue Valentine.
During a recent episode of Dax Shepard's podcast Armchair Expert, Williams recalled that during their stay together in 2010, the two tried finding ways of annoying each other:
"We shot the first part where they’re young and in love and everything is going really well and then we took a two week break and we lived together. Office hours, baby, like, 9 to 5. Professional situation. So we did these improvisations during the day to, honestly, find out ways to annoy each other and to destroy this thing that we had made," Williams told US Weekly.
Gosling played the role of Dean, and Williams played the role of Cindy in the film. The romantic film shares the story of a couple who fall in love madly in their 20s, but their relationship takes an unexpected turn. Williams also received an Academy Award nomination in the best actress category, she lost to Natalie Portman for her performance in Black Swan.

Williams further elaborated in the podcast that the film's director, Derek Cianfrance, would give them exercises where he gave them fake scenarios to act out before leaving the two to themselves. Williams added that playing out those scenarios was fun.
"After you’ve had this frustrating day, now you’re going to go take your daughter to the amusement park and try and have a good time," Williams mentioned during the podcast.
Though Williams also said that she had started disliking herself due to exercises like these, as sometimes the exercise did backfire.
"You don’t have to hate me, because now I hate me," she quipped. "I’m annoying. We [were] calling forth all our worst qualities!," said Williams
Williams also noted that nowadays actors do not get a chance to play along like this and said that one should try selling the idea to a producer:
"We learned how to annoy each other. It was horrible,” Williams recalled about the old times. "I don’t want to give you reasons to hate me. We were having such a good time. The party has to be over so soon?"
Gosling also shared his thoughts and experiences during his stay with Michelle Williams, NPR's Fresh Air, in the year 2010, and mentioned that the characters need to be genuine and that they celebrated all holidays too, like a real family.
"We also celebrated fake Christmas and put up Christmas trees and baked birthday cakes and bought birthday presents, and went to Sears," he told NPR's Fresh Air. "Whatever we could do to create real memories, so when it came time to shoot the [last] part of the film, we were drawing on real memories."
