My Best Friend’s Wedding is in development
My Best Friend's Wedding is finally getting a sequel after nearly thirty years. Variety has reported that Sony Pictures is developing a sequel to this Julia Roberts starrer. Celine Song, who has directed films like Past Lives and Materialists, has been roped in to write the script. However, she will not be directing the project.
Dermot Mulroney, who played Michael O'Neal in the original film, recently dropped a hint about the sequel. While promoting his Netflix series The Hunting Wives, the actor said:
“I know nothing about it. Last I heard, "lawyers were talking.""
His comment might have been about the legal aspect of taking the My Best Friend’s Wedding sequel forward from its rightful owners. In that same interview, Mulroney recalled the shooting days. He said,
"Oh my gosh, the whole thing was a dream. I knew even when I got the audition for it with Julia, like waiting in line with a whole bunch of other guys and I got the role. I knew – and all of Hollywood knew – it was going to be an exceptional movie.”
My Best Friend’s Wedding was written by Ronald Bass and revolves around a food critic named Julianne Potter, who is shocked after finding out that her best friend is getting married. When she hears this news, she realizes that she has been in love with him all along. She then comes up with a plan to sabotage his wedding and make him fall for her.
The film was a critical success and grossed $299.3 million at the box office. It received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score. Besides that, it also received three more nominations at the Golden Globe Awards.
Besides Roberts and Mulroney, the film also starred Cameron Diaz, Rupert Everett, and Philip Bosco.
