Netflix is switching gears about how their biggest films will hit theaters, and KPop Demon Hunters will be the opening act. The animated hit, which premiered on Netflix this June, is all set to be released in theaters via AMC, a collaboration that may spark more collaboration between the two companies. The film quickly became the most watched project on the platform, and with Halloween coming up, it is the perfect theatrical watch for fans of horror and animation alike.
This could be the beginning of an experiment with wider theatrical windows and event-style engagements after its streaming debut. According to Variety, a spokesperson for AMC theaters spoke about the collaboration and said,
"While the two companies have not had a commercial relationship in recent years, both Netflix and AMC are intrigued by the mutually beneficial opportunities that could arise from this and future collaborations. Discussions are underway as to what that may entail, but no further details are being shared at this time."
Previously, a sing-along edition of KPop Demon Hunters played in more than 1,700 theaters during a late-August weekend, giving exhibitors something they rarely get from streamers: a fresh, ticketed theatrical draw tied to a cultural moment.
The release topped the weekend box office for that frame and generated roughly $19.2 million in North America during its limited window, a notable result for a title that was already available at home.
