Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey is one of the most talked about films of 2026, and as we get closer to the film's release date, a new look at Matt Damon as Odysseus has been released, thanks to a cover story by Empire Magazine.

Damon is leading the film with a star-studded cast, in what's one of his biggest roles to date. Fans have already got their first glimpse of his character Odysseus, and a brand new look at Damon in full costume has been revealed by Empire Magazine. The image shows the actor standing with his army in the woods, with arms in a battleground costume, a frame that looks like a significant part of the story.

Speaking to the outlet, Damon opened up on the grandeur of the film and what it was like to work with Nolan, as he said,

“It should be the most massively entertaining film. It should feel mythic. I can say, without hyperbole, that it was the best experience of my career,” the actor enthuses. It was a massive production, spanning vast swathes of the globe, open oceans, thousands of extras, and gigantic props. Including an actual Trojan horse. I saw the horse on the beach and I was just like, ‘F**k.’ It was just so cool.”

More details about The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan’s next leap after Oppenheimer is a sweeping action fantasy that pulls one of the oldest stories ever told into his distinct, high-intensity filmmaking style. He writes and directs The Odyssey, adapting Homer’s ancient Greek poem into a widescreen epic built around Matt Damon’s take on Odysseus, the king of Ithaca whose long road home after the Trojan War becomes a maze of monsters, gods, and dangerous temptations.

The cast list includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, and a wide group of supporting actors joining the saga. Nolan produces with Emma Thomas through Syncopy, keeping his creative circle tight.

The film's X account describes it a "mythic action epic" as it says,

Christopher Nolan’s next film ‘The Odyssey’ is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.

Production stretched from February to August 2025 and spanned Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, Western Sahara, and later stages in Los Angeles. The budget reportedly climbs to around $250 million, making it the most expensive film Nolan has ever mounted and his first shot entirely with IMAX 70 mm film cameras, including a lighter, redesigned version built for this project.

The Odyssey will be in theaters on July 17, 2026.
