Fans are getting glimpses at more and more looks inside Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, and the latest look shows an epic battle scene with crumbling buildings and fire everywhere, with soldiers on the loose. The film is being covered by Empire Magazine for their December issue, as the publication has posted several brand new images and interviews that show the grand-scale premise of the epic film. We have already gotten glimpses at Matt Damon's Odysseus, Anne Hathaway's Penelope, Tom Holland's Telemachus and Zendaya's Athena, among others.

Speaking about The Odyssey, Damon called it "the best experience" of his entire career, while Nolan praised his role and called the character of Odysseus as "not just a soldier. He’s an amazing strategist, a very wily person.”

The director also opened up on the premise of the film, ash he tole the outlet,

“There’s a bit of everything in it. I mean, it truly contains all stories. As a filmmaker, you’re looking for gaps in cinematic culture, things that haven’t been done before. And what I saw is that all of this great mythological cinematic work that I had grown up with – Ray Harryhausen movies and other things – I’d never seen that done with the sort of weight and credibility that an A-budget and a big Hollywood, IMAX production could do.”

Everything else you need to know about The Odyssey

Christopher Nolan’s next big swing is The Odyssey, an epic action fantasy that pulls Homer’s ancient Greek tale into his signature world of precision, scale, and emotional weight. He wrote and directed the film, with Matt Damon leading as Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, whose impossible journey home after the Trojan War becomes the heart of the story. Anne Hathaway plays Penelope, the wife waiting for him, while Tom Holland appears as Telemachus, the son who refuses to give up hope. The cast stretches even wider, bringing in Zendaya as Athena, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Charlize Theron as Circe, and Jon Bernthal as Menelaus.

The story follows Odysseus as he tries to return to Ithaca, crossing paths with creatures like Polyphemus the cyclops, the sirens, and Circe while battling fate and time in a race to reunite with Penelope. Nolan has called Odysseus clever and endlessly inventive, qualities that drew him to the character.

It is all set to be Nolan's most anticipated film, particularly after his success with the Academy Award winning Oppenheimer. With a stellar cast, the power of IMAX and the hands-on efforts of some of the best people in the industry, The Odyssey is one of the most awaited films of 2026.

The Odyssey arrives in theaters on July 17, 2026 through Universal Pictures.
