After five years of dating, Nina Dobrev and Shaun White have formally called it quits on their engagement. In October 2024, the Olympic snowboarder, who is 39 years old and the 36-year-old former cast member of The Vampire Diaries, became engaged with a ring set with five carats of Lorraine Schwartz diamonds. Sources, however, attest that the pair just made the decision to split up.
A source close to the couple told People Magazine:
“It was a mutual decision, and wasn’t an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another.”
The couple have not publicly addressed the split as of now.
The actress sparked rumors before the split became official when she last showed up at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2025, without the engagement ring.
Nina and White first met at an awards show back in 2012, though their romance began in 2019. Back then, the duo were asked to speak at a Tony Robbins event in Florida, and the two became formally acquainted. White said that he "didn't know anything about her" until he became interested after witnessing the rush of people to snap pictures with her.
Soon after, they began dating, and during the initial stages of the COVID-19 epidemic, they moved in together. In 2020, White officially announced their love on Instagram by sharing pictures of Nina Dobrev giving him a quarantine haircut.
The couple shared snippets on social media. It was a high-profile romance where they both attended festivals and walked the red carpet. They also shared special moments like the engagement post and supported each other like White's final Winter Olympics in 2022 to Dobrev's rehabilitation from a cycling accident in 2024.
White, back in October 2024, put up a lavish proposal show in New York City's The Golden Swan in October 2024. White stunned Dobrev by proposing with a five-carat diamond ring while seeming to be on their way to an Anna Wintour-hosted CFDA/Vogue dinner.
Nina Dobrev told Vogue:
“He made the invite look so legitimate. I was in a panic that Anna’s waiting for me.”
The two went on to announce their engagement on Instagram. White wrote:
"She said YES 💍♾️."
While Nina Dobrev jokingly captioned her photo:
"RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé."
Nina Dobrev's past relationship:
Nina Dobrev has been connected to a number of well-known Hollywood celebrities in the past before her high-profile romance with Shaun White.
Ian Somerhalder (2010-2013)
Nina Dobrev dated her co-star from Vampire Diaries, Ian Somerhalder, from 2010 to 2013, for three years prior to their breakup. They collaborated on the popular TV show while maintaining their professionalism in spite of their split.
Dobrev said at the time, as reported by Us Weekly:
“I didn’t want to be dating one of my costars — my goal on the show was to be professional. But sometimes you can’t help who you have a connection with, and you can only fight it for so long — which I did for a really, really long time.”
Derek Hough (2013)
She then went on to date Derek Hough in the year 2013; he was her close friend Julianne Hough's brother. Their relationship didn't last long as they dated only for six weeks.
Liam Hemsworth (2014)
The shooting for both actors was taking place in Atlanta. The Vampire Diaries star and the Hunger Games actor were spotted in Atlanta meeting up, getting friendly and hanging out at bars.
Celebuzz reported:
"They stayed around two to three hours and Nina left before Liam, and as she was leaving they gave each other a good night kiss. The kisses were on the lips publicly outside of the bar … and it was three sensual kisses on the lips."
Austin Stowell (2015)
Austin Stowell and Nina Dobrev began dating in June 2015, but their relationship didn't last long, as they eventually split eight months later.
Glen Powell (2017)
The Vampire Diaries star was then dating the Anyone But You star. They started going out in January 2017, and often shared glimpses like photos of their vacation. Then, eventually, they split by November of that year.
Grant Mellon (2018-2019)
Grant Mellon and Nina Dobrev were first spotted dating in December 2018 while they were on vacation in Indonesia. The duo lasted only for a year, as by October 2019, their split was official.
Nina Dobrev continues with her filming. A source close to the actress revealed to People that the two have parted ways amicably:
“They continue to have love and respect for one another.”
