Maintenance Required, the upcoming Prime Video rom-com starring Madelaine Petsch, is shaping up to be a fresh take on rivalry, anonymity, and small business pride. Set to premiere this October, the film stars Petsch as she plays Charlie, the owner of an all- female mechanic shop whose world turns upside down when a corporate competitor moves across the street. On the other hand, she starts an online friendship with an anonymous stranger for comfort. Plot twist: Her rival and her online friend are the same person.
The trailer released shows glimpses of this enmity and alliance as she tenses up around him in real life, but seeks his solace as she finds herself on the internet. Maintenance Required is directed by Lacey Uhlemeyer, who is marking her debut after working on the documentary project The Dancer.
According to Amazon, the plot synopsis for the film reads,
In MAINTENANCE REQUIRED, Charlie, the fiercely independent owner of an all-female mechanic shop, is forced to reevaluate her future when a flashy corporate competitor moves in across the street. Seeking comfort, she turns to an anonymous online confidant - unaware she’s confiding in Beau, the very rival threatening her business. As sparks fly both online and off, the truth threatens to blow everything apart.
Petsch is no stranger to strong, vivid characters. She first rose to fame as Cheryl Blossom on Riverdale and then moved on to stronger roles with 2020's Sightless and 2024's The Strangers: Chapter 1.
Joining her in the film is Jacob Scipio, cast as Beau, who has previously worked on Bad Boys: Ride or Die and Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse. Both the actors are being noted for their chemistry, promising a love story that's both tense and romantic, while we root for the enemies-to-lovers trope.
What Madelaine Petsch has said about Maintenance Required
In an interview with Glamour Magazine about the film, Petsch opened up about how Maintenance Required is different from other romcoms, as she said,
“I think rom-coms have become a bit formulaic, so we tried our best to bring the film back to those times".
She then continued to talk about her role in the film as she added,
“She is a hard worker and really set in her ways when you meet her.”
Maintenance Required gives a modern twist to the concept of anonymous online confidants, which means the film will likely explore themes of identity, digital communication, and what it means to be in love in an era where most of our lives take place on a screen. The film rings with familiar tropes of rivalry, mistaken identity, and romance, with a few more current concerns of ownership, competitiveness, online anonymity and emotional authenticity.
Maintenance Required will release on October 8, on Prime Video.
