Actress Ali Larter is responding to the criticism that her character received from many, for her portrayal on the Paramount+ series, Landman.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently, Larter commented on the fan backlash her character, Angela Norris, received for her overly-s*xualized depiction. While addressing the criticism, Larter said,

“I’m also like, ‘Objectify me. C’mon.’”

While addressing concerns of netizens, Larter added,

“Nobody’s putting me in a position that I’m not comfortable being in. I have two children. I’ve been married for 19 years. I love playing this character. If there was something I was uncomfortable with, I wouldn’t do it. What’s more uncomfortable is that people are so uncomfortable by their sexuality.”

Why did Ali Larter’s role on Landman receive backlash?

Ever since Landman began streaming late last year, some fans have criticized the show’s ‘hyper-s*xualization’ of the female characters, most notably Angela Norris, played by Ali Larter, and the character’s daughter, Ainsley Norris, played by Michelle Randolph, according to Daily Mail.

Some fan reactions even called out the show’s creator, Taylor Sheridan, who was accused by a fan of compromising the female characters’ dignity, with another fan noting that he had a “a perverted sense” of how women really behave, as per Daily Mail.

During her conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Larter took the criticism head-on, and responded,

“There’s good press and bad press. That’s challenging. I try to keep myself at arm’s length from that and stay with the work. This is Taylor’s baby.”

Christian Wallace, the show’s co-creator, had also previously addressed fan backlash, and during a conversation with Deadline, said,

“I will say, you can ask almost any West Texan if they know some loud, audacious, bold women, and you’ll almost certainly get a resounding yes. There is that big Texas personality to both Angela [Larter] and Ainsley [Michelle Randolph].”

Ali Larter defended the multi-dimensionality of her character

Larter defended the creator, Taylor Sheridan’s vision while emphasizing that Angela is a multi-dimensional and passionate character. She told The Hollywood Reporter,

“Anytime I would take my foot off the pedal, Taylor was on step. He wants her loud and emotional, like a tornado of energy. The way he envisioned this show is that it has so many tones… you shift to these really quiet moments between Tommy and Angela.”

Highlighting the complex nature of her character, Larter added,

“And if I didn’t have the really grounded moments with Billy, it would be a different show for me. That would be just one side, but this character is a full rainbow. I have so many parts of myself that I can put into her.”

While sharing with The Hollywood Reporter that Angela’s character is full of nuanced contradictions, Larter said,

“She wants to be flashy in a bikini and be all hot, and then you see her crumbling trying to keep her family together. You see her battling and feeling like she’s getting older… It’s very multi-dimensional, and that’s why it doesn’t bother me.”

Presently, the cast is filming the second season of Landman in Texas.
