Who directed Titan: The OceanGate Disaster?
The 111-minute-long documentary is directed and produced by Mark Monroe, along with other producers including Lily Garrison and Jon Bardin.
During an interview with Tudum, Monroe shared:
"When the Titan submersible went missing, I was horrified and mesmerized by the 24/7 news coverage and global social commentary — just like the rest of the world... There was no context for what could have happened to those onboard, and the only touchpoint was the Titanic, a story that’s now become a grim fairy tale."
He continued:
"The more I dug into this terrible tragedy, the more intrigued I became about how this could have ever happened in the first place, and who exactly was the man who built and then went down with this ship. We hope that this film can help provide answers to these very questions."
Mark also gave some insight into what prompted Stockton Rush to build the Titan submarine. He elaborated:
"[Rush] felt the pressure of saying that he was going to do something, and as the years go on and the technology keeps returning these not great answers, that pressure begins to build."
Director Monroe also expressed what he hopes the viewers will take away from the documentary. He said:
"The greatest tragedy, and what I hope audiences come to understand, is how this disaster was completely avoidable."
The Titan: The OceanGate Disaster documentary gives viewers a chilling deep dive into one of the most horrific diving accidents of 2023. It is more than just a retelling of a doomed voyage, the documentary aims to reveal to its audience a preventable disaster. The world premiere for Titan: The OceanGate Disaster will be at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 6, 2025, and the Netflix release will be on June 11, 2025.
