Molly Gordon reveals why she didn't want Oh, Hi! to be a horror film
Molly Gordon recently appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers, where she confessed that she never wanted her film Oh, Hi! to be a horror flick.
She said,
“It’s interesting. We were discussing that it’s such a dark time [in the industry], but horror’s kind of the only thing that’s working but yeah, people would go, ‘I love the movie, but can she kill him at the end?’ But it’s like, when you think of When Harry Met Sally, what if Meg Ryan just killed him at the end? I want some just romantic movie, does there have to be death always?”
Oh, Hi! focuses on Iris and Isaac, a couple who go on a romantic getaway trip. Slowly, Iris realizes that he is not as committed to their relationship as she is. She then decides to hold him hostage. Reading the synopsis, it's quite easy to assume and expect that it might as well take a turn into horror.
Upon its release, the film met with mostly positive reviews and holds a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The cast members include,
- Molly Gordon as Iris
- Logan Lerman as Isaac
- David Cross as Steve
- Polly Draper as Iris's mother
- Geraldine Viswanathan as Max
- John Reynolds as Kenny
In an IndieWire interview, director Sophie Brooks spoke about Gordon, who is also a producer on Oh, Hi!,
“She’s such a talented performer, she’s such a good singer, she’s so funny, all of these things I know that she’s good at. It was first time I’d written with an actor in mind, and it was really exciting to think, ‘OK, I have these constraints, I have these limited amount of locations, these limited number of actors, what’s the funnest version of this movie with these constraints?’."
How different do you think the film would have been as a horror flick?
