More details about One Battle After Another
One Battle After Another blends Paul Thomas Anderson's signature emotional intensity with razor-sharp political undercurrents. Co-produced, written, and directed by Anderson himself, the film draws loose inspiration from Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland and features an ensemble cast. The story centers on an ex-revolutionary who has turned around his life after his partner leaves him with a daughter. Soon enough, he is pulled back into violence when he and his daughter are hunted down by a corrupt military officer, who is here to clear out his past.
The film even won the praise of Steven Spielberg, who reportedly watched the film three times. As reported by The Film Stage, the director talked of One Battle After Another and said,
“What an insane movie, oh my God. There is more action in the first hour of this than every other film you’ve ever directed put together. Everything, it is really incredible. This is such a concoction of things that are so bizarre and at the same time so relevant, that I think have become increasingly more relevant than perhaps even when you finished the screenplay and assembled your cast and crew and began production.”
Anderson had dreamed of adapting Vineland for years, but his deep admiration for the novel initially held him back. Instead, he began writing original stories that eventually fused with Pynchon’s world, weaving together his own characters and themes of rebellion, family, and disillusionment.
Richly cinematic and politically charged, One Battle After Another stands as Anderson’s most ambitious and provocative film yet.
