"Our marriage was very real to me": Sam Asghari retorts after Britney Spears calls their marriage a 'fake distraction'

Sam Asghari is choosing to fire back after his ex-wife, Britney Spears, spoke publicly and candidly about their short-lived marriage. As per Asghari’s representatives, the model/actor shared the following statement with PEOPLE,

“Our marriage was very real to me. It may have been short, but we were together for seven years. I was in love with her, will always have love for her, and wish her the best always."

Asghari’s statement comes on the heels of his ex-wife Britney Spears sharing a bombshell Instagram post about their relationship on August 25. She dubbed their time together as “the hardest years of my life.”

The ‘Toxic’ singer also claims to have been alienated from her two children from her previous marriage to Kevin Federline.

"We’re just people so fragile and human the hardest years of my life were my two sons gone for those 3 years …I was cut off from calling or texting and I remember in shock my secret to survival was denial and a lot of tears its weird me and Sam were married but it almost felt like a fake distraction to help me deal with it …"

She continues,

"Well I know im healing bc im hungry again like a child or baby… im so hungry it hurts and when I eat its like its my first time ever eating in my life …I believe although I loved my home there is waaay too much abuse and trauma in there…."

Both parties seem to have different feelings about their time spent together.

Sam Asghari has spoken publicly about his relationship with Spears in the past. In a June 2025 interview with Page Six Radio, he provided some further insights into his takeaways from the relationship.

“I can’t sit here and lie and say, ‘It wasn’t good for me,' When you’re in such a public relationship ... it sort of gave me that platform for who I am.”

He continues,

“I mean, we met on the acting set. We met as co-workers.”

The pair met on the set of the music video for ‘Slumber Party’ in 2016 and would eventually get married in June 2022. Sam Asghari would ultimately file for divorce on August 16, 2023, 14 months into their marriage. The divorce was finalised in May 2024.

As per reports, Asghari is currently in a relationship with Brooke Irvine.
